Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Not eating, any tips to get my old girl to eat something.

Since January my 8 year old Rottweiler hasn't been right. She was lying around all the time and struggling to get up my vet diagnosed severe athritis in her shoulder and back legs. She is on loxicom daily for this and it has helped. Although she hasnt eaten properly for months the last two weeks have been a nightmare to feed her, I have lost two dogs in the last two weeks and know it could be that she is grieving too but deep inside I feel there is something underlying, it's as if she has just given up.
In the last 4 days all she has had to eat is 1 hot dog ( handfed) and 1 egg scrambled also handfed. I have tried everything I can think of like chicken, lamb, steak, cooked meats, veg, raw food, she is even turning her head away at goats milk which she would usually drink.
Any tips or advice will be appreciated. I have her booked in at the vets tomorrow morning. We also have an appointment next Monday for bloods but I can't wait until then without her eating and me worrying for her.

Does she like fish? If so, how about trying the frozen white fish fillets from the supermarkets?
Hope you find a solution soon

We had an old dog that lived for two weeks on jaffa cakes as it was the only thing she would eat.  We were at out wits end and gave anything that she would take.  She came through this stage but only by offering warm food, whatever we tried her with she'd only take it slightly heated.  It was awful, our neighbour was fishing and giving us trout every day as he knew she was only eating that!  She was very elderly and unfortunately this trait continued to the end. It was hard but heating was the only thing that worked, along with pandering to her every whim

Worked with one of our dogs when he went off his food too - and so did mushing dry kibble around in a bowl with some Brussels pate until the pate scented or slightly coated the dry food.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I am so sad to say Valley started to bleed from bum tonight and collapsed, we rushed her to the vets, she had given up, bless her soul, the vet said she could feel what she thinks was a tumour and as she has been being seen by the vet this must of been very fast growing.
She is at peace now with my two dogs I have lost in the last fortnight, I am struggling to take this in x

I'm so so sorry for your loss. I didn't want to say anything earlier because its only a silly theory of mine but when our collie refused food but still looked interested enough to sniff it, it was shortly after that his time to go, I always thought he knew and was making the decision for himself.. ...

I'm so very very sorry for your loss especially having lost your other dog so recently too - I'm sending a virtual hug to you and all my thoughts. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

RIP Valley,  run free. x o x

Thank you so much Tinar, I felt the same like she was making the choice to go :( x

I had the same thoughts as Tinar, that she was telling you it was time, so sorry to loose three so close together.

So very sorry, it is hard at any time to lose a loved member of the household but made worse if it is close on a previous loss. Really do understand we lost two in nine days last year and it does hit hard.

I've only just caught up with this and am so sorry for the loss of your dogs, how heartbreaking. You are in my thoughts.
