Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How can you tell if your dog enjoys his food????
- By goat Date 18.03.15 11:57 UTC
Sorry if is is a strange question but apart from a dog eating all his food are there other ways to tell if he actually enjoys it.  I was feeding Royal Canin originally and it would get gobbled up with a lot of tail wagging.  I changed to Acana and although he gobbles it up really fast his tail stays between his legs and his sides are held in whilst earing.  If he enjoyed his food would the tail be wagging still

Just a thought, is there a difference in the kibble size? From what you describe it sounds like he is bolting his food and this would be of concern to me. It may be worth trying to slow him down some how. You can do this in a number of ways and I am sure others will be along with suggestions on how to do this shortly. I would not worry to much about whether he is enjoying his food or not. The fact he is eating it would be enough for me  Edit to add: If you do think he is bolting his food, try putting some of it on a tea tray. This will slow him down as he will not be able to grab huge mouthfuls and just gulp them down.

My dogs favourite food is frozen raw chicken wings. He throws then up in the air and bounces around them before tucking in. He doesn't act like this with any other food, which considering he eats kibble is probably not a bad thing as if wouldn't fancy him flinging that about. He gets lots of other foods too such as sardines and he makes a clucking noise when he knows these are coming but nothing gets the same reaction as a chunk of frozen chicken.

This is perfectly natural. When pups feed, this happens often...it doesn't mean they aren't enjoying what they eat

I am so relieved to read that it is natural for pups to hold their sides in whilst eating it was concerning me but he does bolt his food it is gone in a flash.  I will try the tea tray idea that's a great one because I do feel he needs to slow down.

I used to put a rock or something else heavy in the bowl so they would have to eat around it to slow greedy ones down.

I can tell by the way they run back and forth rubbing their faces along the bottom of my once cream-coloured sofa. They never seem to do that on their own dark brown leather one. Interesting.

Yes, goat, my dog enjoys Royal Canin but needs to control her weight.  I would not recommend Hills Science Plan Weight Perfect as the food stinks and so does my dogs poo.  Makes me gag. Also she never asked for more like she did with Royal Canin.  I'm going to try AATU salmon and herring dog food.  Expensive but I think you give half the amount.

I would say that the difference in attitude from consuming R.C to tail down and sides tucked in for the new food ( Acana) is almost a guarding posture, probably because he likes it so much.  Best to put a Kong in his bowl, not a rock which he could chip his teeth on.

My Boston's were not much interested in kibble- since switching to raw over 3 yrs ago they now bug to be fed at feeding time. Being 14 & 15 yrs old
its nice to see- now they start bugging a half hour earlier lil brats!
My Dane cross follows me around barking & goes to her spot lol
