Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Crufts - Striking Steel - Which Breeds Take your Fancy?

I have been following the progress of Oliver (Striking Steel) the Wire Fox Terrier who has enjoyed huge success over the last year and won BIS in more shows than any other breed,  apparently. He is to die for and I have a picture of him on my fridge to inspire me when I am grooming my own WFT !!!  How I wish my Sophie could aspire to such heights......  Mind you Sophie's brother is entering Crufts so I shall keep my fingers crossed for him!

Which breeds take your fancy folks?

He won a lot last year too but an outside dog (king Arthur) came along at crufts in 2014 and took his spot!

Would be sad if he didn't at least get best terrier this year, he's off to America next year so would be his last UK achievement!

I'm in terriers so he is where my money will be :P But is also like to see Janeyjimjams Wheaton terrier do well. As it would be a great fairy tale for someone who just took up showing their dog on the off chance and has done so amazingly well! :D

Oh I know he is gorgeous isn't he! I was rooting for the American cocker last year, we actually had treated ourselves to BIS tickets so were watching the gundog group and my shriek when she won it made several people turn and stare! :-D I always have a soft spot for Maltese with their beautiful flowing coats, and I think Salukis look terribly elegant running around the ring too. And of course I will be taking the most beautiful Cavalier in the world myself! :-D

I have to admit this is one dog that doesn't do it for me at ALL (is the breed really meant to move like he does? To me it looked like "ouch ouch ouch I am stepping on burning coal"), but I feel sure he will take BIS. Hope I'm wrong!

Lucy

I love Salukis too!!! Soooo elegant - just imagine walking such a creature around one's local field .....:wink:

Goldmalai

The WFT moves with that stiff legged gait that is the way  the breed moves - even my own WFT  (not really a show girl) does THE walk!!!

Defo a terrie type movement. My WT is the same - I think it's because their legs are bushed out (with no flowing coat to cover it) you can't see the movement in their paws/toes. Giving the look of walking on stilts :D

Just imagine trying to find one after you'd let it off the lead and it had vanished 5 miles away after a scent :-D

I rather like the bouncing gait of the terrier myself, I think the WFT looks very smart trotting along. But then I like most breeds for at least something (apart from Pekingese which I'm afraid I just can't warm to)

I was watching open dog for the wire foxes this year and Oliver came third in the class, beaten by the terrier group winner from last year.

After admit I was pretty smitten with the mini bull who came group 4, what a happy bouncy boy!

Lol Marianne, I said the same thing about walking on hot coals.

I think the mal is the most striking of the finalists so far but have fakkwn back in love with pyrenean mountain dogs again.

The flatie has it for me at the moment, the Mal is a real showdog though ;-)

Pleased the flatcoat got RBIS, though I'd have liked him for BIS.

Yes I liked him very much - was also much taken with the Maltese and the Saluki!
