Hi I would love some advice am a bit confused my puppy is now 3 months and was having 4 meals a day of 30g each meal. I dropped the late evening feed but am not sure if  I should increase the other 3 meals so that he still gets the same amount.  Sorry I don't know if that is clear, it isn't to me lol but if he is having 120 g a day over the course of 4 meals should he be having 120 g over the course of 3 meals now? Should I increase the other 3 feeds to 40 g a meal? I have done this but not sure of that is correct he has also had diarrhoea the past few days since.
Thank you for any advice.

Hi,

your puppy should still be having at least the same amount of food, so in this case puppy should still be eating 120g of food. Also, rather than just dropping the late night feed, the three feeding times should be evenly spaced over the day.

If you had heavily increased the pups food intake then the diarrhoea would make sense, but as you are actually feeding less the loss of a feeding time should not have dramatically affected the digestion.

At 3 months puppy will be ready to be wormed; but if your worming regime is up to date I would be concerned. A young puppy with consistent diarrhoea over the past few days may be at risk and I would seek advice from your vet.

Hi
Thank you so much for helping me.  I took him to the vet this afternoon because he started scooting along on his bottom across the floor and I wondered if it may be to do with his glands.  The vet has put him on Hills prescription diet and pro kaolin and I am to use them till he has a normal stool again.  Then give him his regular food, if he gets diarrhoea again the vet has suggested we change his food as it may not agree with him.  He has been wormed so we were thankfully able to rule it out and vet thinks he is too young for a gland problem.
He was on Royal Canin when he came home from the breeder but I switched to Acana as I wasn't happy with the composition of Royal Canin but now I am wondering whether to switch back as it seemed to agree with him!
Thank you for explaining the feeding amount to me that is what the vet told me is afternoon :-)

Hi,

we all try and feed what we believe to be the best product for our puppy, but sometimes what we think is better ultimately may not suit them.

Sometimes it can be a process of trial and elimination and I always think when dealing with a puppy's tum "if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it!"

It could be a simple case of you swopping his diet too quickly, rather than it not suiting altogether, so when reverting back to his normal diet, do it slowly, rather than all at once.

Introduce a small amount of Butternut Squash into his diet and a small amount of Live Goats yoghurt as this will promote good bacteria in his gut and help keep it nice and healthy.

I once had a puppy that seemed to have bouts of diarrhoea, without apparent cause, and I used Pro-Kolin Enterogenic very successfully. Although it is designed for long term management of tummy problems I now always use it when transitioning my dogs onto any new food. It might be worth having a look at that.

As with regards to his bottom scooting, I find when puppies have a bout of diarrhoea they sometimes have a little "cling on" (a small amount of residue left around the anal opening) which makes them squeeze again to try and expel it and sometimes makes them "scoot". They are simply trying to remove the offending residue. I always use fragrance free baby wipes when they have diarrhoea and simply wipe bottoms after each bowel movement until something more solid is produced.
