Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Grain Free Puppy Food
- By rjsxx [gb] Date 20.02.15 12:30 UTC
I have a litter of puppies due in a few weeks and im looking into grain free puppy foods. My dog is on Wainwrights grain free, although PAH only sell the puppy in 1.5kg bags which is going to be a nightmare! Having looked online the only puppy versions i can find are Purizon, Taste of the wild and Simpsons. Does anyone have any experiences with these brands? Have heard of TOTW and Simpsons but never used myself. Also, are they easily obtainable as i don't want new owners struggling to get hold of them and changing the pups diet. TIA x

From personal experience only:

Taste of the wild gave both my adult girls and puppies very loose stools. Was very pleased with Simpsons, this is the main food I use for both my puppies and adult dogs.

First thought was JW but they only do grain free in Adult...........
Applaws DO do a puppy and all their food is grain free but not huge no of stockists, though you can get it on line, they do 2kg and 12.5kg

I'm not sure but wainwrights salmon and potato might be grain free and I'm sure they do it in a larger bag than 1.5kg.

I always wean puppies onto a raw diet starting at 2.5 weeks.
I do however introduce a dry kibble (Applaws) a little later so that when the puppies leave home they are already
used to a dry covenient food if their new owner is unable to continue with raw.
Applaws and raw will rear a nicely conditioned puppy, there are no tummy upsets and no big bloated tummies either.
I have also used raw meat with Orijen and Acana again with lovely results and no upsets.

I must say that I have never reared a litter on a complete kibble by itself !

A client of mine feeds this and the lack of smell and composition of the poo is minimal and even commented on it to the owner who told me what they feed.

Canidae do Grain Free dry foods.

I have checked and they also have one for puppies - called "CANIDAEĀ® Grain Free PURE Foundations Dry Puppy Formula Dog Food"

(they also do all their range in both wet (canned) and dry kibble)

For future info - Applaws do a puppy food.  Their dry food is grain free and I was sent a decent size bag of food for all my puppy buyers.  Even small breeds do well on this, no looseness at all.
