Topic Dog Boards / General / Tapeworm- Pet Passport?

If travelling from UK to Netherlands does a pup also need tapeworm treatment for the pet passport? Our vet says it is only needed when entering the UK (which the pup wont be). Just wanted clarification please

No just valid passport with rabies to travel out

Thank you very much for your reply.

It's only UK and one or two other countries that require the tape worm treatment.

I had a very stressful situation this morning with WFS cargo at Manchester airport where I was told my dog didnt have the tapeworm treatment and it could cause problems at Tenerife? I explained to them that my vet went through everything with me and he doesnt need it only if hes coming back into the uk which he isnt. The guy checking my dog in insisted I was wrong and then went on to say my vet hadnt stamped the section for medical examination. I had a 'fit to fly letter' thankfully but what a stressful situation and rude guy. It made saying goodbye to my puppy that bit harder as well :(

When my pup went to Spain he DID have to have the tapeworm treatment.

It doesn't say anything in the spanish pet passport requirements about needing tapeworm treatment from the UK

Thats what i thought too..I have searched high and low and cant see anything that says they need tapeworm treatment to enter Spain from ther UK. I feel physically sick right now for my friend and puppy :(

Odd because it was my buyer's vet in Spain who said the pup had to have the worming, and so we did have it done (I remember it clearly as the vet we used was so great -he cut the tablet into pieces and mixed them with Hills AD and fed to the pup who absolutely loved the experience ).  But if the rules as printed do not mention it then the Spanish vet must have been wrong.

This is why I asked as I remember when we last exported to Holland (over eight years ago now and things have changed since), Defra were saying one thing and Dutch embassy another and vet at the time didnt have a clue. Have searched the new legislation high and low and there is no mention of going out, only coming in to UK for tapeworm. The Dutch website just mentions pet passport and rabies

It's not just the UK that requires the Tapeworm treatment, Ireland, Malta, Finland & Norway also require it from countries other than the UK & the other countries above.

This is because the species of Tapeworm that the treatment is for in NOT found in the UK & the above countries. Echinococcus Multilocularis can cause fatal liver disease in humans.

Spain has no such requirement

I knew there were a couple of countries other than UK.  I suppose just for making sure not to have problems I'd treat even if they did not require it.  If in doubt do it.

I know things are constantly changing, but when I moved to Spain with my gang of dogs and cats, only the rabies (and microchip) was required by law for entry into Spain.  Obviously all were already up to date with other jabs, which I kept up there along with other jabs appropriate to the area, but in the 6 years I was there rabies and microchips were still the only things required by law for living there.  I´ve not heard anything different from friends who still live there.
