hi everyone, my working cocker, mauser, seems to release his anal glands more than any other dog we have ever had! Sometimes, it is a scared reaction, if something has made him jump or a visit to the vets! but most of the time it is when he is laying down and gets up or even when he is asleep. I did ask the vet a couple of weeks ago, as he had just released them on the table! the vet emptied them and said they were quite full, but mauser had released them only three days before that, fully, up the dining room wall when he had his ear tattooed - so understanderable! Should they have filled up it that small space of time? The vet suggested I add some bran to his food as more solid stools should express the glands on the way out, yuk ,but his poo is quite hard anyway? There was no infection. Is it common for dogs to constantly empty their glands, he can be sitting there doing nothing and suddenly the room is filled with noxious odour and then he just licks himself. I have started to wash him afterwards as the stink is terrible if it has gone down his legs and he now just 'assumes the position' at the end of the bath to have his bottom washed - like a kid! Is this normal? Not the washing - the releasing  Julie:)

Julie, he maybe has refilled since the vet emptied them if it was a few weeks ago and it is probably overflow he is releasing when he gets a fright etc. The bran is a good idea, what the vet means is large bulky stools not hard ones. One of mine is a bit of filler upper (a cocker too) so I feed Beta as it has a decent amount of roughage in and it seems to keep the problem at bay for us. You could also get the vet to show you how to empty the glands it does not seem to be a job that they mind handing over :D
