Hi,
I have a litter of 8 day old pups. Last night after feeding from mom several of them have started getting tummy cramps. They moan and pull their legs In to their tummies. They are pooing as far as I am aware as mom cleans up though I have seen a few. She's also full of wind herself and her tummy is gurgling when she has a drink.
She also started on antibiotics yesterday for mastitis in her back teat so do you think this is linked?
I'm just waiting for a call from my vet to see if there is anything he can give them but any ideas would be appreciated. Hate seeing them uncomfortable. All are active and feeding well.

Thanks

I have used Woodwards Gripe water for infants with success. http://www.nhs.uk/medicine-guides/pages/MedicineOverview.aspx?medicine=Woodwards%20Gripe%20Water

I do have some of that but worried about how much to give. Someone told me 2ml but that seems an awful lot to me.

It might be a good idea, to counter the antibiotics going into mum, to give her and her puppies a little natural yogurt - if you can find goats yog. so much the better.  Even at only 8 days, you can put a small amount of yogurt on their tongues.

Hopefully your vet will get back to you asap. and the puppies will be okay.   It could be that you may need to bottle them, using something like Esbilac and see if this stops but if she has Mastitis, it's really best they continue to suckle on the other teats.   I can't remember, but I don't think the one we had with Mastitis was given antibiotics - just warm compresses to get the teat cleared and working again.

Another thought - did you walk your bitch into the vet's office if she went in, and even more, did you wipe her feet and teats with diluted antiseptic before putting her back with the puppies?

She didn't actually go to the vet, I rang him and he put the antibiotics up for me.
I'll give the yoghurt a go thank you. He wasn't too concerned as they are all feeding well and active and thinks it's something that will pass so got to monitor them and hope it clears up. I've tried a bit of gripe water Bx things seem a little more settled. Thanks for the advice.
