Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Cream gene in Golden Retriever
- By B-e-c-k-y [gb] Date 16.11.14 15:17 UTC
Hi,

I love my GR's and was out walking with my friends today who have 2 very cream (almost white) GRs and they asked me how the retriever got so pale.

I have always been told that there was one top show winner who was very cream and because of his success he was used at stud heavily and therefore spreading the gene and this then explains why the working strains are still much darker.

Is this true?

Thanks

Only what a breeder said to me last year when I was looking around for a puppy.

We were talking about colour in Goldens and she mentioned Camrose Cabus Christopher who was a light coloured dog who appears in many Goldens pedigree somewhere along the line, as being influential in colour.

Perhaps that what the people you spoke to meant.

Don't forget that the breed standard says "Any shade of gold or cream, but neither red nor mahogany" so all the shades we see are just as correct.

I used to live near a successful kennel of Goldens and they were almost white, she had been in the breed since the '40s
