5 nights last week obviously weren't enough and we've had them again tonight.
She hasn't really bothered the last 2 years but this year she has been panting, unsettled and  frightened. Tonight she was so upset that she was sick. In the end I took her out in the car to give her a break.
Grrrrrr.

Have you tried stuffing her ears with cotton wool balls?
I did this for my oldie, and it really made a difference this year - she doesn't react if they are in the distance, and they all sounded like they were in the distance to her, with muffled ears.

My friend has doggy ear muffs for her extremely reactive collie!

I tried this but she managed to shake them out after a while.

Mine is still at the stage where, as soon as it starts getting dark, she shakes & pants & we havent had any fireworks since night of 8th..mind you they were as if on a battle site!!!

I don't think she would tolerate cotton wool in her ears.
I am going to get some Rescue Remedy to try, and failing that I will have to ask the vet for some form of relaxant.

How much RR would I give to a 4 kg dog ?

Try Kalm Aid.   I've used it with my Basset who didn't tolerate some surgery he'd had very well.  This worked fine.   I agree, much as thankfully this year doesn't seem to have been very bad (maybe people down here are just broke!!), we did have them from the weekend before the 5th to the weekend afterwards.   Too bad the 5th was mid-week, and WET down here!!

Can't help you with RR because I'd put it in the water bowl, and with our bowls being 'communal' I can't.   This can work however, much as a good slug of brandy would probably be as good!!!

I am fairly sure you just give 3-4 drops at a time. I just put it straight in dogs mouth, It is virtually impossible to 'over-dose' with it and you can give it several times in a short while.
My 1st GSD had 'panic attacks' and if one started I gave him 2-3 drops every 10 minutes for about 5-6 doses.

It seems to work well with some dogs/people and no effect at all with others so a case of try it and see :-D

Bit late now for this november but my remedy of choice is melatonin - it doesn't sedate and in all the dogs I've known take it, my own included, it has a much higher efficacy than anything else I've tried (and over 11 years with a phobic Remy, that was almost everything non-prescription!).  Huge safe dose range too.

It's been so good for Phoebe that since she started on it (she gets it daily as she is chronically stressed) I've been able to reduce how much prescription stuff she gets (alprazolam/Xanax) - so much so that this year, she's only had one pill through the entire firework season.  She's still be stressed, but nothing like she used to be.  She will get one for new year's eve, but then all the fireworks happening at once is too much just for any OTC remedies for her.

Same here. You can try your best but sometimes there is nothing that works. Rue is like that with thunderstorms, as she hears them coming and gets herself into a state. And they aren't really predictable, well not as predictable as fireworks.

I won't be forgetting the supercell storm we had here about 14 months ago. Multi layered electrical storms, looked fantastic like disco lighting outside but not good for dogs - it lasted 2 hrs and it took another 2 for her to calm enough to sleep. Started without warning but while it lasted, I gave her  everything within reach - valerian tincture, skullcap & valerian, sleep-aid tabs, even 5mg of my mother's Diazepam. Just not enough, by any means.

Smiling at the memory here.  My late Bearded Collie stood on the back of the settee next to the window.  She watched with fascination and just wouldn't come away to let me draw the curtains.  I have never seen a dog enjoy herself like it.  I guess it's not the norm though.

Fireworks have been worse than ever here this year and for the first time my 5 y o has reacted. Tried all the usual OTC calmers (but didn't think of melatonin) and even made a crate into a den by partially covering it up. Didn't work.  She actually flipped the crate over, opened the side door FROM THE INSIDE, jumped over an extra tall baby gate into the lounge where I was with my post op GSD. So I asked my vet & he prescribed Diazepam but she got so worked up even from it just getting dark and her anticipating the bangs that the max dose didn't have any effect. Thankfully she's back to normal now.
