Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / What to feed a 6 month golden retriever

Hello
My golden is at present on Autarky puppy and is coming up to 6 months old. I am sure I read somewhere that goldens and similar breeds need their growth to be slow and therefore shouldn't be on too high a protein diet after a certain age. Her current food contains 28% protein and I am wondering whether she should still be having this much protein. Unfortunately Autarky only do a puppy or adult food (which contains 23% protein) and not a junior one so I am wondering whether I should switch her to a junior complete food with a lower protein content, keep heer on her puppy food or switch to an adult food. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I moved my Golden onto adult food at about six months and she has done well on it. This is the first time I've used puppy food on a pup as there was no such thing as puppy food last time. Not entirely sure why I did as there is not a lot of difference between them.
As far as I am aware, you need to be more careful with protein levels on giant breed pups.

Jodie is right about giant breeds having to be very careful with protein levels, my bullmastiffs are put onto a high quality adult feed by 10/12 weeks of age and have done remarkably better than dogs i have had in the past that have stayed on puppy food.I don't see this bum high, flat pasterns and gangly legs or even over knuckling with the adult food but slower more even growth.

Unless pup is very lean and not easy to keep weight on should be fine on the adult food.

When dry foods first started in the UK the protein levels of the puppy foods were only 24% and pups reared fine.

Your current puppy food is not excessively high compared to most.

As your breed is susceptible to Elbow Dysplasia a developmental problem then keeping at sensible levels is a good idea to discourage excessive speed of growth and keep weight gain moderate.

You could always mix the puppy and adult to get a intermediate level of nutrition until he's a year.
