My Border collie is almost 12months old now and I was wondering when to start him on 1 meal a day  thanks in advance

All my dogs are on 2 meals a day as adults - one meal in the morning and one in the late afternoon/evening.

Mine are all on one meal a day as adults it seems to suit me and mine. I would go to two then down to one in 6 months if that's your preference and see how he goes. Some dogs do need the two meals being sick with just bile if they are hungry mine have always been fine and they are 3 completely different breeds, gsd,fcr ,pomxchi

Mine are usually on one meal a day by 12 months unless they are of the occasional that run everything off type that always seem to need extra.

I have a breed prone to GDV (Bloat) so as adults, I have always fed two smeller meals a day, one around 7 am and the second not later than 5 pm.   Are BCs prone to GDV?

I'm another who would never feed just one meal. Any dog if unlucky can bloat and spreading the food out onto two meals makes it so much safer. Plus I'd simply feel sorry for the dogs if they only got one meal a day. Come feedtime they'd be so hungry. :)

My dogs are always fed twice a day, but many years ago it was traditional to drop to one meal a day at 12 months. But if your dog is very energetic or a breed prone to bloat then two meals a day is safer. If they get extremely hungry then they tend to gobble which can lead to colic.

LOL - me too :) Mine is fed twice a day too.

Talked about this years ago with the very good vet I used at the time regarding my 1st GSD. His thought was that the amount of food a large GSD needed would overload the stomach if fed in one meal, also 2 feeds broke up the day for a dog...........ie would YOU like one big meal at breakfast then nothing till next morning I always feed twice.

See now I have the opposite problem the daily amount mine need is only 150 - 250g a day depending on age and activity (that doesn't even fill a 6 inch food bowl), so doing two meals a day it's to easy to overfeed, and they don't seem as satisfied with the amount in two lots.

The only ones of mine who get two meals are those needing more than 200g a day.

Mine do get a plain biscuit when we go out in the day and before bedtime.

On the other hand, with toydogs, it can be really dangerous for their blood sugar to drop low, so despite them having only tiny amounts, they must have two meals at least.

I think it does depend on amount if food in relation to dog size. 

Mine need quite a small amount compared to their size.

I certainly wouldnt feed my dogs one meal a day, it is far kinder on the stomach, for a dog to have it's food split into 2 meals. In fact we have only just put our 23 month olds from 3 to 2 meals.

When I got the Bedlies,  I aimed to give them 2 meals a day.

However,  they had other ideas and  around 9months to 1year they all started refusing the morning meal.   So I went to one meal a day and they are happy with that.

It isn't a strict rule though,   for a week or so after a season they would occasionally need a little extra in the morning,  which I'm all to happy to give.

Mind you,  they only eat about 110 gms of kibble,  so splitting it would leave very little in their bowls.

My Border Collie really can't handle going that long without food.  He would be sick and bringing up bile.  I split his allocated feed into 2 and his tum is much better for it.  I do think sensitive tums is quite common in the breed.  I've put it down to just how hard they work.  Even when giving him brain exercise I'm amazed just how much he puts into it.  But then, as a breed, they always want to give 110%.

Funny enough mine don't want o eat in the mornings/daytime.  When I tried to switch mine to morning feeds they wouldn't take to it.

I always feed two meals a day. It's much better for them! Otherwise the blood sugar levels will be on a roller coaster! I lasts feed my meals an hour before or after exercise too as it is meant to be much kinder to the stomach and reduce risks of bloat.
