Topic Dog Boards / Health / what is upsetting her tummy?

I apologise in advance for length of post but will try to add as much info as I can.

So, pup is 7 weeks old today but is currently on her 2nd lot of antibiotics for loose stools and vomiting.

She was weaned onto royal canin baby dog milk and small amounts of tinned meat. As her teeth came through I started to add barking heads puppy kibble. She was doing well, putting on 500g a week. Firm stools and almost fully housetrained at 4 1/2 weeks. Then one evening she vomited up her dinner followed by very loose motions. No blood. Put her on cooked chicken and rice with plenty of water but no change in 2 days. Vet prescribed 7 days of broad spec. antibiotics and a sample was sent.

Next day stool was formed, pup happier, everything getting better, reintroduced kibble slowly after 3 days. One week later results are back and nothing came up but 1 day after antibiotics finished, loose stools back - no vomiting.  Stronger anti bio's for 10 days, pro kolin and back to rice and chicken. Today, stool has shape but still a little soft and yellow.

She is going through basic training with me, bouncy, happy and playing all the time, eyes seem a little dull but I would feel cr*p too (no pun intended) if my bum was sore.

What could it be? Is she grain intolerant?  Even though she was perfectly happy for 2-3 weeks on it. She isn't keen on raw but will keep trying when settled. Lab report conclusive on no other illness present or toxins. Any help appreciated.

Sorry but have only just read this and hopefully pup is feeling a bit better.  She is very young and their tummies are very sensitive at this age.  Normally small amounts of cooked chicken and rice do the trick so I would keep on with it.  But little and often.

I have a puppy who is now 8 months old and I followed the breeder's instructions and kept her on Naturediet whch is a wet but entirely bland natural diet.  It comes in several flavours,  chicken, rabbit etc all with rice and also puppy/junior,  and I have never had runny poos or any probs at all.  So now my three other dogs (all adults) are on it and they all love it.  You could try one or two of these to see how she does,  just using a tiny  bit at a time.  Naturediet is available in Pets at Home or on line.

I do hope your little one is feeling better - it is such a worry when they are so little. Do let us know how she is.

Thank you for the response snowflake. She is doing much better thank you.

We are back to 3-4 meals a day but still on rice and chicken. Have been advised to stop her feeding from mum completely (was only having the odd comfort suckle) as might be too much protein overloading her tummy from the meat, kibble and mum's milk so have been trying that.

Will start introducing kibble again tomorrow and see what happens. She has had some naturediet but I have to say, I hate the smell! Will keep you updated.

I tend to give youngsters a teasp -  a tablesp of Bio yoghurt with at least one meal a day.   Very rarely get tummy troubles no matter what dire stuff they snarf.

I also use it if any of the dogs has a dodgy tum -  they all get it.    They do, love it too.

Of course this is providing that the dog can tolerate milk products,  and they don't cause runny bums ;-)

It is possible to become intolerant to both grains and proteins(and milk/milk products)

Maybe it would be worth doing an exclusion diet to find out the cause,  and whether it's diet related

Thanks dill.

We stopped her access to the milk bar and it seems to have done the trick. She had some naturesdiet yesterday and today and will be getting some kibble with it tonight. The pro kolin has finished but she still has anti bios left.

I was giving her a tsp of yogurt with rice when it all started and vet nurse turned her nose up and said dogs are lactose intolerant. None of mine are and regularly enjoy frozen yogurt with mango or strawberries but didn't want to risk it so stopped. Tried her on raw chicken again and she still doesn't like it! Mad pup...

Just think, this time next week, she may be in her new home...and I'll still be worrying about her poo!
