Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Peeing when greeting visitors!

I have an 8 month old gsp girl. When my son  comes to visit she always gets so excited that she dribbles wee indoors! We have never had any problems at all with her toilet wise. Most nights she goes ten hours without weeing! Could this be a puppy "thing"

It's a submissive 'thing'. Some dogs grow out of it, others don't. Never scold them for it because it's completely outside their control - just make sure you always greet them outside where it doesn't matter.

No we never scold her for doing it! It's funny when we try to usher her out into the garden whilst all she's trying to do is be extra friendly to my son! My six year old grandson thinks her peeing is highly amusing! Let's hope it's a puppy thing though! Thanks Jeangenie.

My Jozi (now 14 3/4 with cast iron bladder) used to do this when my Dad visited.

We found the trick was to say quick outside wee wee's, and have her wee before greeting him.

She grew out of it.  She to was about 9 1/2 months, but can't remember how long it took as we just had her go outside as soon as they came to the door, and then she did it herself, Granddad comes go and pee.

Can't remember when it stopped being a conditioned response.

Have seen other recommendations on this where the greetings are done outside, and everything kept very calm to avoid over-excitement (which is part of the issue). Dog is rewarded for being calm, possibly even in a crate rather than loose when visitors arrive and let out once the human greetings are done and people are settled and sitting.
