During the colder spells, how do you heat your kennels? I am thinking that a heat lamp (to come on via a timer may be the best and cheapest way to heat them?

Mine sleep in a kennel to keep cool, LOL

Mind you in a city suburb in the South, it never gets that cold.

Even in sub zero temperatures the temperature in the kennel ( I have a  thermometer hanging i9nside kennel Window) is always over 10'C when occupied, and that's with having windows opened a tad to avoid condensation.

Well I have always been told my breed would not need heating BUT ABS rules say different (or rather they say no less than 10 C and if it is very cold, mine definitely goes below that) so we have just installed tubular heaters in our kennels. I used the same type for cats for years.
This type:

Marianne where are these ABS rules that no-one seems to know about until they get a visit?

Certainly not in the joining literature.

Glad I resigned.

Thanks both :-) My dogs are generally house dogs, but our circumstances will be changing so they will be outside for most of the day soon, so definitely not used to being out side in very cold days!! They will also be outside where there won't be a lot of shielding from bad weather, so it will get fairly chilly. I'll keep a thermometer in there, is 10 degrees a good temperature to not let it go under?

It's on the KC website. Go to the section about assessor visits and there will be a link to a pdf mentioning guidance for breeders:
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/343848/guidance_v2.2.pdf

Page 5 mentions temperature.

This would very much differ from breed to breed. I know mine like it more than 18 in the house, less than that & they start to shiver, thus loosing weight. I certainly know I dont like to be cold & dont expect my dogs to be cold either. I try to keep it a comfortable 19/20...mind you last month with all doors & windows open & fans going, it was over 30 in my conservatory!!

Whereas my breed a double coated spitz breed even at 4 or 5 weeks old is happiest in cold temperatures, and 10'C would be balmy for them ;)

Ah it says 'recommendations' supposedly not 'prescriptive'.

Maybe they forgot to tell the assessors that?

I know Barbara that Elks would require a difference, thats why I said it would be breed dependent :)

Yes I was agreeing, this is why I really hate the one size fits all ideas.

Marianne I checked your link, and that is exactly the heating that I had for my guinea pig shed.  :-)
