my yorkie has blocked tear ducts have booked an appointment with the Ophthalmologist next week on thursday to have them flushed has anyone have a rough idear how much this is going to cost? because i think i might be in for a shock my budget is about £500 could get more in a couple of weeks.

my 15 yr and half yorkie boy died on 31st july this year it has been very difficult time sorry my post is so short finding it difficult to consetrate hope i can get some info because  always considered champdogs to be experts people

Bit curious as to why your normal vet can't flush them? It's not normally a specialist job. An Ophthalmologist will always be more expensive than a normal vet, especially if it is a referral. I had tearducts flushed on one of my Papillons at the same time as he was neutered and the cost was minimal.

Sorry can't remember the exact cost, had one of ours done when having surgery for something else but don't think it was more £30.00. Told there was only a 50% chance it would work so hopefully at least one eye would be OK, sadly it didn't.

My GR had one tear duct flushed when he was neutered 8 years ago and it didn't add much on to the bill at all. It was done by my normal vet and he has had no problem with it at all since then.

Indeed, any vet should be able to do this without you needing to hit the Specialist route.   Once you do that it's 'kerching'.   I had mine to the area Specialist under the KC/BVA Scheme and was in for little over 20 minutes, of this most of the time was spent completing his history, which could/should have been done before my appointment via our regular vet.

I forget the overall fee, but suffice to say much as I wanted a second opinion, I didn't take him back.    If you can get this done without needing a Specialist, then I'd do that.

thankyou everyone for the reply when i took my dog to the vet he he told me he thought it was blocked tearduct and i would have to see the specialist he comes to the surgery 1 time every 2 months the consaltaion will cost £100 for 1 hour and will be doing some tests am begining to get a bad feeling about this wish i gave it more thought.thankyou for the replys every one

If a dog has tears flowing from the corner of an eye it may be due to a blocked tear duct. It is a very simple procedure for any Vet to apply Fluorescein stain solution to test if the duct is blocked or not. It should be possible to do this in an ordinary consultation. Clearing the duct can be done by any Vet. I had both ducts cleared recently in a small dog and the cost was £50. It could well have cost more if the dog had required a more expensive anaesthetic.

yorkieloved - If you are not happy with the route your Vet has recommended to put your mind at ease ask for a second opinion from a different Veterinary Practice.

thankyou again for reply i am happy with my vet they are very kind must admit more worried about the price my vet will not give me an estimate ,just recently changed my dog food to origen have noticed a great improvment since last week also using warm compression over the corner of the eye there does not seem to be any discharge.
but as you say a second opion could put my mind at ease will let everyone no the results from thursdays appointment if i feel i still need to go

You could also try homeopathy for this....if you ring Ainsworths Homeopathic pharmacy they are so helpful and will let you know the remedy and how to administer.....remedy and p&p will probably be £10 so maybe worth a try while you decide.

I have successfully treated blephritis and blocked glands in the eyelid by following their advice.....it was Silicia that I used but they will advise you and may mean you don't need to have such invasive treatment.
