Topic Dog Boards / General / Cocker Pup - weird question!
- By Dill [gb] Date 20.07.14 17:08 UTC
Lol  - I'm full of questions today.

Six month Cocker Spaniel pup, show bred.    You can grab literally handfuls of skin all over.     Is this normal?

I have tight skinned Bedlington Terriers so it seems weird to me.   My brother had a Cocker Spaniel, also show bred, and I don't remember her having such large amounts of loose skin?

Is it his age?

Haven't mentioned anything to his owner, don't want to worry her.

Most puppies seem to be wearing a skin several sizes too large for them - don't worry about it!

I always think my pups could turn round inside their skin if they wanted too !!!

My Cavaliers often seem to have lots of spare skin even when fully grown!

I've read that loose, spare skin is an evolved safety feature meant to protect critters from attacking animals of any species who grab loose skin but don't get through to vital organs or maybe even muscle.  So it would be normal.  I suppose some have more than others.

Quite normal in Cocker. We find it's the pups with most bone and substance who have more loose skin but they do tend to grow into it eventually!

Thanks for the info folks :-)

Having never had non-terrier pups, it came as quite a surprise to see all this loose skin.   He makes a Shar Pei look 'tight' Lol

Bedlington Terrier pups have slightly looser skin than the adults, but nothing like this, and by 6 months it's hardly noticeable :-)

I'd forgotten about the baggy skin in pups until recently, having only had a terrier before, and some while ago now. We looked after a 5 month old CKCS for a friend a couple of weeks ago, and he looked like his pants were bunched up over his bottom when he sat down :-D
