Nothing at all to do with dogs ... but.... How much would you expect to pay to have the hem of a full skirt dress taken up ? Nothing fancy just cut to length and stitched.

Why didn't you ask first what it would cost?

How long did it take, and how much would you expect to be paid for that time?

Taking up a full dress skirt is a skilled job and time consuming - I'd expect it to take a good couple of hours for a competent job.

Personally,  I think you had a bargain.

It was a "friend" who did it for me, I did not ask the price as we have been friends for well over 10 years... I just assumed it would be reasonable, mates rates so to speak.
I will just add that my DH does all sorts of jobs for her as she lives alone, he is a builder  he never expects anything from her except the price of any materials he may need, and often it takes weeks till he gets even that much.
I even clip her dog for nothing, and she is happy to borrow my carpet cleaner....and cleaning fluid, never replaced...
I brought her cigarettes back from holiday and it took her 2months to pay for them after numerous requests
I was somewhat stunned when she asked me for £25.
I think the "friend" part of our relationship has been somewhat over stretched now...I feel a bit insulted.
I have paid her. I pay my debts....

Just to add it was done on a machine as she is a very good seamstress and does take in sewing jobs for others. It took her a couple of hours at most. Not a bad rate of pay really. £12.50 an hour. I even provided the cotton as she had non to match.

Time for your husband to start charging her perhaps  ....

Its fitting to say....
Time for the "givers" to set the boundaries ...as the "takers" obviously can't.

Next time she asks for your other half to do a job, tell that she needs to get the materials herself as he's busy.  See how long it takes her to get everything together when she needs to fork out up front. If she does it in good time - she's obviously taking advantage. If she takes a while - pretend its slipped your mind! And next time she needs to borrow the carpet cleaner, tell her a part is broken and needs replacing and that you've had to hire the rug doctor to clean your own.

She'll get the message.

not quite the same but I had a cover for my car dog bed sorted by out dry cleaner. He sewed up a couple of seams I had opened to get it off then put in a 24inch zip. All done  for £15 including zip . Strange but I had asked my neighbour as she is into all things sewing but she said she was too busy. I was going to pay her £20

Blimey, seems my £12 was a real bargain, it was a straight skirt, so possibly would have been dearer, if it had a bit of " swirl" to it.
