What have people found truly helps dogs to grow a coat and keep it?
Is it down to genes alone, feeding (particular food), supplements etc?
I will be interested to hear your views :)

All things being equal....climate, diet and grooming....nothing!
You breed for coat but no one would make any money telling you that so they sell you pills and potions.
The ONLY way to see if any product works would to have two identical dogs at the same coat stage and only one is given the supplement...otherwise you will never know if it would have grown the coat in any case.
My dogs are well known for coat and mine get no magic stuff.

Thanks tooolz for replying, I thought more people might have responded as there are loads out there who buy all sorts of products and it would be interesting to hear of others experiences :)

I suspect many buy these miracle cures just in case.

Like tooolz I find it it genetic and nothing else. These days when I have a dog in a bad moult and want to speed it up, or a bitch who has had pups and is short of coat, I add vegetable oil to their food and that has worked just as well as dog specific expensive potions LOL. (I have found the oil DOES help, having had several heavy moults recently I gave it to the showdogs only and they finished moulting twice as fast as those that did not get it.)

An old dog person once told me a good coat is 'bred for, fed for & cared for' in that order which I have found spot on. No amount of feeding or products can correct the breeding.
