At agility shows dogs are regularly left in cars/vans whilst owners walk courses and the most common way to keep cars cool is to use silver reflective sheeting. I leave the tailgate open and put reflective sunscreens on the front window and then cover the side windows with white sheets - Tesco value range - which I put inside the car, from one end to the other and then hold it in place by shutting the doors. I use a large garden tarpaulin to cover the tailgate and this hangs down both sides of the tailgate and is held in place by large plastic clamps that I attach to the tailgate. I hold the front of the tarpaulin up with two tent poles and create a shady area under which I can sit.
The car is far cooler than the outside temperatures and my dogs always choose to sit in their car crates in the cool - long coated breeds.
I did buy a gazebo that went over the car but found it wasn't as effective as the method I now use and in a slight wind the legs on it bent despite it being pegged down - it was purchased from Halfords and I wouldn't recommend their pop up gazebo.
There are quite a few companies that make covers for cars depending on how much you wish to spend.
