Topic Dog Boards / Health / Rough Scaley skin on elbows.

Hi, my 12yr old Golden Retriever PelĂ© has scaly patches on both his front leg elbows, the fur around them has gone discoloured although he doesn't lick that area and on one side he has a soft flat tag (wort). It doesn't seem to bother him but looks unsightly.  Any advice on what I could use on his skin ?    Pele doesn't lay on concrete outside, he's very much an indoor dog now he is older.

It sounds like callouses older dogs do get them, I rub oils in my old girls hocks where she has recently developed some. It won't make the hair grow back but should keep it nicely moisturised and stop any cracking.

I've used Aloe Vera gel on my elderly rescue's elbow calluses. They have slowly receded, and she rarely scratches them now - when we first got her they were scabbed.

Thank you for the responses, I have both oil and Aloe Vera gel at home here so I will give it all a try.  Nice to know its nothing to be worried about. Again many thanks :)

What I found worked was coconut oil (organic virgin c.oil like you can buy in health food shops, though I buy mine on Amazon) rubbed into the area, consistently. It also grew back hair on the rough patch....almost unheard of. It took time and religiosly applying it daily.

Coconut oil is lovely stuff! I cook with it, use it on my skin and hair and my raw fed dogs get a teaspoon every day - they love it!

It is amazing stuff isn't it. I give mine a teaspoon a day too.
