Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 8 day old puppies upset tummies.

Hi, any advise please.

I currently have a young litter of 8 day small breed puppies. There are only 3 pups in the litter, and mum has a lot of milk. Up until about 4-5 days the puppies would have what i class as normal, typical 'stools'. I didn't actually see that much due to mum cleaning up constantly.
But over the past few days the pups have got incredibly loose bowel movements - they seem to 'release' a lot of excrement 10-20 minutes after being stimulated on their own, and are constantly messing their bedding and getting themselves filthy.

It is to the point now that mum is very very reluctant to clean them as the smell/taste must be so bad, whereas previously she was brilliant, so we are cleaning them constantly with warm water and cotton wool and keeping their enviroment as clean as humanly possible.
There is no blood in the stool up until today and i saw a tiny amount in one of the boys, but i can also hear 'wind' breaking from the puppies prior to the pooh. It varies from a watery consistency to what can only be desrcibed as say tomato sauce. I am with my pups and mum constantly. She does not leave their side. Mum is on a very high quality diet, has always eaten well and has been wormed regular up to whelping date. I am baffled as the puppies are gaining weight/incredibly active/vocal and otherwise very healthy puppies developing in a typical way.

I have contacted my vet, who has had a look at the puppies and stated they seem hydrated, in good health and recommended the use of protexin formula,he thinks maybe they are over indulging at the milk bar, but after 2 days the stools do not seem to be improving at all - but if anything getting worse. All my dogs are vaccinated up to date and mum has not been for a walk since having the pups. Her stools are completely normal. Any advise really, really appreciated i am starting to panic .

thanks

My pups always seem to get a bit loose around this age.  I think its something to do with the change in mums milk.  It suddenly because very rich and abundant and there tummies take a bit of getting used to it.  I normally find as soon as they start on first taste of solids and first worming all sorts itself out. I have however never had blood in stools.

I would be asking your vet for antibiotics at this stage.

Hi, just an update, we have no blood in stools at all other than that tiny amount i saw this morning, they have been clear since. pooh is a yellow mustard colour. The vet states the small amount we saw this morning may be caused by inflammation of the stomach lining, and i should be worried if it happens again, but so far so good.

I have called him again this afternoon and he has suggested giving the puppies another day or two to settle, then possible use of synulux drops?? or noroclav?? (sorry if that is not right) for the damn to pass to the puppies in case of possible infection, but is a believer in not prescribing them if they are not needed as says can weaken mum and pups immune system in the long run. I feel torn as do not want to take them into my practise again due to it being nearly an hour away and the health risks of them catching an actual bug - my vet does not do house calls usually.

On the first check up he looked at the colour of their mouths, pinched their skin, checked the fur, looked at their back end, listened to their chests, heart beats and also weighed the pups. Could he have missed something?

He does not believe it to be an infection but very much to do with mums milk bar and the richness of her milk, the puppies are very big and very plump - very active too. I am going out of my mind with worry, hubby on night shifts so we are taking it in turns to be by their side so don't think the exhaustion is helping.

we are using the protexin every 6-7 hours and have now finally seen a tiny improvement but not enough to make me feel like we are out of the woods. Does anybody have any suggestions? mum is showing a little more interest in cleaning them up but we are still having to constantly bathe and clean the pups.

very worried :(
