Topic Dog Boards / General / i dropped my dog!!! vet says it can wait untill tomorrow!!
- By nikki2o14 [gb] Date 26.05.14 13:12 UTC
my 3 year old chi had jumped the garden wall which is around 2ft high if that because we were cutting the grass and my mum happened to walk past with her dog she my chi got all excited and jumped the wall to greet my mum, my mum grabbed her and picked her up because there was a car coming down the road, i hopped the wall to get her so my mum put her into my arms but she tried to jump and i tried to keep ahold of her but couldnt, as she jumped up she flipped over and landed on the path on her hip, instantly she wouldnt move her leg or stand on it, i picked her up and took her in the house.... she wouldnt move her leg so me and my partner were thinking its just a dead leg feeling, i gave her 5 minuets then called the emergency vet since its bank holiday and explained all of this and said shes not crying... shes not yelping if i touch her leg shes just not putting it down. the vet says to keep her resting completely and call up tomorrow to be seen by the end of the week........... now this is not my personal vet, this is an emergency vet and i know my vet would have told me to go up even just to keep my mind at ease but this vet said no we are very busy and this is not an emergency.... a chihuahua falling from around 4ft onto their hip area then not putting weight on their leg isnt an emergency??? they said she must not be in pain because shes not crying so she can wait.
should i search for another vet in my area?? or can this really wait until tomorrow....

well i would want her looked at it could be broken

Well to be honest if it was my dog and a) she did not cry, and b) she was happy enough to eat and otherwise act normal, then I would be a lot happier to wait until I could see my OWN vet, that I know and trust. Cage rest until then, and your own vet should see you first thing tomorrow morning if you call and explain as soon as they open. But if you are not sure, or if she is not eating or acting depressed, then you have every right to demand to be seen today.

Oh and PS, please increase that wall by using netting or similar so that it doesn't happen again -or she could be stolen or a big dog could jump over......just not safe.

What did your vet say today?

have we lost her ?

She's posted another thread and I asked on that for an update here.

Busy or not, they should have seen her - isn't that what an EMERGENCY vet is for???    This was an emergency and to wait a couple of days isn't what I'd have accepted.   Yes, crate rest, but broken bones start to heal almost immediately and if not set, could heal wrong which means the break would have to be re-broken and set.   I understand you could only deal with what you were given, but I'd not have been at all happy.    I hope your dog is okay?

thanks goldimali

i waited until morning i rushed up my vet and she wasnt happy they made her wait at all and checked her over and said her knee cap had popped out of place and was to the side, so its back in place now and there may be some ligament tenderness so shes on pain killers for a week, then we are back at the vet the week after to check all has healed well.... and shes on strict rest until the vet gives her the all clear.

Poor little thing I hope she feels better soon. V bad of the vet not to see her immediately. Not wanting to frighten you now this has happened once just keep a general eye on her in case it happens again patella problems arnt unusual in chi's

Thanks for the update -glad nothing was broken. I agree I'd keep an eye on her as it sounds like she might have luxating patellas -don't know if it could pop out otherwise.
- By JeanSW Date 29.05.14 22:18 UTC
I agree with Goldmali, I would suspect luxating patellas with a toy breed.

Worth asking to have your own vet to check as surgery is available for this hereditary problem.

Indeed - it could well happen again, and for sure, there is surgery available to deepen the grooves the patella sits in so it shouldn't pop out again.   And again too bad about the Emergency Vets!!!

So glad this is fixable and the delay has not caused extra complications.
