Topic Other Boards / Foo / Shoulder surgery - any experiences?
- By Nikita [gb] Date 20.05.14 11:39 UTC
I've got hypermobility in a lot of joints, only mild but my shoulders particularly are unstable.  They were ok until last October when Willow caught me off guard and shot off to my left on lead, dislocating (technically subluxating, it went straight out to the side) that shoulder - it went straight back in but has been awful since.  Specialist has confirmed that as well as the pre-existing lax ligaments, the joint capsule is now very loose.

I'm getting physio for it but today I've not even been able to do the exercises as it just kept dislocating and even just sitting here, it's slipping out of joint so, so easily and is horrendously painful.  This is the second round of physio - the first was, frankly, absolute sh1te but the woman I'm seeing this time is really clued up, it's just the joint itself that's the problem.  If this round doesn't help, then I'll be looking at surgery.

The specialist was utterly unhelpful - he described what I think was thermal shrinking as the available procedure, and said that he doesn't do it and never will because it's basically pointless: googling says the same thing.  However googling also finds other surgical options which are apparently much more successful.

I'm really hoping to avoid it if I can, I'm going to ask the physio next week about trying some of those electrical muscle toner pads to try and get some tone going while the joint is so unstable at the moment but if I do end up having to go surgical, has anyone had any experience of possible procedures that they could share with me?
