Hi all
I'm getting a Hungarian Vizsla bitch puppy in a few weeks and I'm trying to think of a name. (Obviously I can wait till she's here but if I can find a name I like the breeder will try and use it for her pedigree name too which would be nice)
I for some reason really like Jinx, what's making me doubt it is that I mentioned it to a couple of people and they pulled a face, apparently it has negative connotations for people and that puts them off. it doesn't say that to me really but I'm wondering what everyone else thinks? Honestly?!

I did have some other thoughts but nothing that's really grabbed me, any ideas welcome!

Thanks

If you really like the name Jinx, then you should run with it and not worry what other people think :) Or instead of Jinx (a curse), you could alter it slightly to Jinks? Rather befitting because HPR's do have a habit of suddenly changing direction when hunting and they wind something :)

I rather like the name.
She will be your dog, living in your house, does it really matter what other people think ?.

I have become very superstitious when it comes to names and even research the pedigree name a lot to ensure I don't pick something that would (excuse the pun) jinx the future of the pup. It seems to have happened to me a lot! For instance the dog with the pedigree name All Or Nothing either won everything in sight or nothing at all, and the one whose pet name is Dot is utterly dotty!! So personally I would not call a dog Jinx.

Why not change it slightly to Binx or Tinx (short for Tinkerbell). I know 2 dogs named Dotty who are both potty. Let us know what you decide on.

I say if you like it, go for it :-)  I pick less common names that suit the dogs and not everyone likes them, but it's me who has to live with it so nuts to 'em!

Willow especially has been quite the divisive dog - before I got her she started with her original owner then went to my friend, then back to the owner before she came here.  The owner called her Willow, my friend called her Taylor and wanted me to keep that name - but I hated it!  Loads of people met her during that time (friend is a dog walker/sitter/small retailer so she has a lot of customers coming to her house) and when we ask them now which they prefer it's right down the middle between the two names.  But when it came down to it, it's me that owns her now so it's me that got to pick :-)

The meaning of the word jinx would put me off too.  It means someone or something that brings bad luck.  Not for my puppy.

I looked up words that mean to bring good luck and wasn't happy, myself, with what I found.

Sorry.

I like it why not translate into Hungarian for KC name it's Vészmadár. Only problem is I can't find how you pronounce it !!

>why not translate into Hungarian for KC name it's Vészmadár

My sister could tell you if you wanted me to ask, we are quarter Hungarian and she speaks it a bit. I think the sz is a 'sh' sound so it would be something like 'Vayshmadar'. I like the name Jinx but I'd probably change it to Jinks, then her KC name could be High Jinks!

Love the high jinks!
I'm leaning towards Jinks instead, got a nicer meaning, and TBH I think in my mind I was thinking of both meanings when I first though of it.
(I know its my decision but if I know everyone thinks it's a horrible name then it would sort of spoil it for me, plus I do agility so hopefully its name will be heard a lot if we ever get placed!)
x
thanks all!

One of my latest puppy buyers does obedience and agility and her pup had a name she just could not live with (her words) -that is as in pedigree name, she said she would not be able to stand it being called out at Crufts (the previous dog she has from me has taken part in inter regional and world cup obedience at Crufts and usually the pedigree name is used then) so I agreed to change it. I can definitely understand that sometimes names matter even more than for just pure pets! :)

High Jinks works even better then! :-)

She'll most likely get called Jinksey....so nothing to worry about.

Name is very important I have to like the way it sounds and looks but I'm sad :)

Hi Lucydogs

sz  in Hungarian is pronounced as English 's' but s in pronounced as 'sh'.

Think Jinks idea is excellent.

Thanks! I can count a bit in Hungarian and say hello & goodbye and 'I am a Hungarian girl' which my Granny taught me, but that's it! :-D
