Topic Other Boards / Foo / Anyone had a TIA/Stroke (human)

Good morning people.
First I am sorry for my absence however on Tuesday afternoon I had a second episode of my left leg not holding me up it sort of felt heavy and the pins and needles in my left arm came back. I already had a Doc's appointment at 4.20 and from there went straight to the hospital - admitted to the Hyper Actute Stroke Unit at Good hope which I am pleased and overjoyed to say is a new unit http://www.heartofengland.nhs.uk/str...s-locals-fast/
I must admit I did not call an ambulance but my treatment in the unit was superb.
I left this morning and have been told I have had a TIA (mini stroke) although because I still have left sided weakness and getting words wrong at times I am between mild stroke and TIA technically apparently TIA symptoms go away within 24 hours whereas mine are still there apparently I have been exceedingly LUCKY. within 24 hours I have had a chest Xray, CAT scan and neck/jugular ultrasound. Have to go as an outpatient for
72 hour heart monitor
nerve conduction studies
MRI
and return to the consultants clinic in 8 weeks
Also sent to the stroke club and speech theraphy for my missing words if they do not come back when I went in my strength in left side marked out of 5 was 1 this morning it was 3.5
So I cannot drive for 4 weeks and am totally grateful to the stroke unit, the great AMU (actute medical unit) and my fantastic GP who came to the hospital yesterday to see me.
I am 51 in June and now family history or risk factors so I say - be aware people you never know I am not being pesamistic  but optimistic as I am here typing this.

I hope that you will make a full recovery and enjoy good health once again :-)

My Mother had what we now know to be several TIA's but these weren't detected as she didn't seek medical help, thinking that her funny turns were part and parcel of her getting older. Of course we now know differently and she sadly, she went on to develop vascular dementia at a fairly young age.

We really need to be more health aware as we get older and many of us think we are not old enough to have suffered anything serious but what you have suffered serves as a warning sign and it is a good job that you acted on it.

I think that men are the worst, most think that they are immortal!

Hope you make a full recovery x

My father had a major stroke when he was 54 and lost sensation down the whole of the right side but didn't loose his speech although quite slurred in the first few weeks.

The one thing that did help was the physical therapy to gain movement so he could walk and drive . He had a good few months of recovery. He lost a shed load of weight as well and lived for a further 10 happy years until he died after he developed septicaemia after a triple bypass operation.

My dad had a series of TIAs in 1989, age 54. He's never had another one (although he has been on medication ever since).

Hope you are able to make a full recovery and that this is just a small blip

I hope so too. A lot of the recovery is the first week I am told.

Oh Kazz - I'm not on CD nearly as much as I used to be - so I've only just read this thread.    Sending you positive thoughts and vibes and lots of love and best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

Thinking of you xx
