Have an elderly male Weimaraner.Since having our other Weimaraner put to sleep at nearly 17(!!) a couple of years ago,he now sleeps in our bedroom.
However I tend to get up during the night as suffer with chronic ongoing lower back pain and so does the dog(get up,not suffer with back ache!).
Have had numerous urine tests carried out on the dog,as he will then go out and wee at about 0300,having been out at circa 2300hrs.
Then he will go through until 0700-0800.
The vet thinks that he is so in tune with me that he is following my pattern as when I was away for a few days my partner did not have a problem with him.....solution apart from moving me into spare room would be greatly appreciated,as during the day he is fine and will go hours without needing to go out.....need to break this habit of his...
Is serinum any good for this kind of behaviour as resorted to giving him half a Valium and was ticked off by vet as Shadow has a regularly irregular heartbeat and is on Vitmedin?

I am not clear what exactly the problem is? from your description the only "symptom" is that your dog will go out and have a wee when you get up in the middle of the night? If I were to get up and let my dogs outside at 3:00am they would also likely have a wee, even if they had one earlier. The behaviour sounds perfectly normal to me. Especially as a male dog often wees frequently to mark. Unless there is something I am missing?
I'm afraid I also cannot see any problem at all..........
If your dog slept downstairs and you got up for a stretch or to use the toilet your dog would probably just listen and then go back to sleep and not wish to have a wander in the garden too.
If I woke up and went down stairs, I would automatically let my girl out into the garden, not because she would be desperate to go out, but because she is now alert and awake, when any of us fully wake up after a few hours we'll go to the bathroom, why is it any different for a dog? I would automatically let my girl out and she would go....... no doubt about it, whereas if I didn't get up she would sleep through.
As your dog sleeps in your bedroom, it is only natural once you are up, he will most likely fancy a toilet break too. If you are up, don't understand the issue, if he were disturbing you to go out every night whilst sleeping, then I probably would have urine tests etc, but not for this reason, you're waking him up, of course he will happily have a bathroom break. :-)
