I've been attempting to watch "Jamaica Inn" on the TV but have had great difficulty hearing what they are saying, to the extent that I've had to put on the subtitles!

I don't think it's my hearing, but a lot of programmes seem to have mumbling actors, and following what is being said is proving difficult on occasions.

Anyone else having the same problem?

I think everyone did :)

My husband gave up and refused to watch it. We have a 'sound bar' connected to the tv in order to improve sound which it has done, but even turning the volume up to 'shouting' it made very little difference.
Reading papers this morning, the BBC execs are pointing the finger at production faults, I just think the actors need to be taught to open their mouths when they speak.

I ended up watching it on subtitles in the end, it isn't your TV :) on a slightly different note I thought the production value was brilliant as visually it was fantastic :) the BBC seem to have a great team of designers at the moment :).

The various Boards have been full of complaints about this - although fact is just lately we've found we need the sub-titles on more and more often!!    I thought it was just us .... glad it's not.  It's not so much the dialect (JI) but more about actors mumbling these days.   We turn up the sound, and then it starts blaring out ........

You are not alone!!

I agree with you triona, visually the production is fantastic, although I watch Mary's red dress with interest as she plods about Bodmin Moor. Sometimes it's just a muddy hem, other times it's wet up to her knees. It is authentic, but amusing to see what the red dress will be like next. :-)

I watch her tideline of mud with great interest too! And yes, in the first episode they might all have been mumbling in Martian for all I could understand, and even in episode 2 'Joss' is no better. And I can't even lipread him either because his face is frozen!

Sounds like the acting was hugely accurate, have any of you ever held a conversation with the Cornish? ;)

(Love 'em really)

I must be the odd one out, I had no problem with the actors' speech. Could be because I have a lot of Cornish friends ;-)

Could be Tommee. I'm from the West Country so the accent was fine by me, better then some of the Scottish accents in the Shetland series for instance. It was Joss that was so difficult to understand (he of the frozen face) and trying to lip read to get some sort of sense was just impossible.
There was some suggestion in the papers this morning that sound production was better in some parts of the country then others.

I lived many years in Devon so I'm fairly au fait with the West Country accent, but I do need to be able to actually hear it! ;-)

It was on the BBC News (I think) at lunchtime saying that they had about 800 complaints. They played some bits and it was very difficult to understand :)

Me too - living on the N.Cornish coast it's not the accent, but more the mumbling and volume.   Pity.

I didn't find the accent a problem and I'm not from that neck of the woods. The last 2 episodes were much better than the first regarding the sound quality, although I still couldn't understand a word Joss said and left the subtitles on throughout.

I think last nights final episode was better on sound or had I got used to trying to understand it more?? I am from the south west but they didnt have the same accents as 'Doc Martin'...lol
I have to agree that Sean Harris' character, Joss was certainly the hardest to understand.

Maybe the mumbling from a few of the actors was to help with the overall sculdugery of the plot & to give it more drama??
