Topic Dog Boards / Health / Tramadol & Cephalexin - can they cause incontinence?
- By Kimdys [ca] Date 22.04.14 02:09 UTC
Hi, My dog was prescribed cephalexin (anti-biotic) and tramadol (pain killers), by our vet after getting 10 stitches, on Friday from a dog bite to prevent infection.  She is 3 years old and had 2 large accidents today within half an hour of each other afternoon (Monday) one while sleeping, and one when she stood up.  She's been house broken since she was a pup, and has never had an issue with incontinence before.  We took her back to see the vet for a follow up checkup tonight, but he said this shouldn't be related to the medications. I'm not sure if I believe that.  We're going to do a urine test, but I've just read that tramadol is a highly addictive narcotic that isn't approved by the FDA for use on dogs.  I will discuss this with the vet, but wanted to know if anybody else has had any similar experiences, or knows anything our vet may not be aware of?

I had a dog on tramadol for weeks to try to ease crippling pain, and it didn't make him incontinent.

I would think Tramadol is over kill for a dog bite wound, usually kept for severe pain, but can't imagine why that combo would cause incontinence.
Is she spayed?
It may be more to do with that and anxiety than drugs.

I have no experience with dogs and tramadol but when it was given to my Dad after his hip operation he was hallucinating and doubly incontinent.  When I researched and found that side effects to this opiate are common, I asked for them to stop it and he was back to normal in 48 hours.

I had a dog on Tramadol for around two years due to him reacting badly to every other NSAID ( HD ), he was absolutely fine once he got over the initial two week settling in period, certainly no incontinence.
