Hello,

What joint aids do people find best? I would prefer to use something natural but there are sooo many products out there!!

I use the following on my dogs:

Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM (preventative)
Salmon Oil (preventative)
Coconut Oil (preventative)
Turmeric
Hydrotherapy
McTimoney Chiropractor

Other products I have used in the past:

Devil's Claw
Green Lipped Mussel Extract
Magnetic Collar
Acupuncture

Do you find any better than the other? Do you use them together?

All my dogs get salmon oil and if they are allergic to that coconut oil regardless of age. That will help prevent joint issues.

All my dogs get a glucosamine supplement from about 7 years old, again as a preventative.

The rest I just use what I feel works best, which might be different for each dog. Turmeric is great and works for many dogs. Two of mine are on it: one is 13 and he seems to be bouncier with turmeric in his diet which means he probably has some joint discomfort (although not really noticeable in every day life), and the other one gets it because he has degenerative disc disease and it means he doesn't have to be on conventional pain killers (yet).

It is just a matter of trial and error as to what works for your dog.

Ok thanks :)

Think I'm going to start with fish oil. Do I you use the fish4dogs one?
- By LurcherGirl [gb] Date 17.04.14 12:21 UTC
No, I use Kronch, but Fish4Dogs is fine too.

Which coconut oil do you use?

I use PinkSun coconut oil (I get it from ebay) which is organic extra virgin cold pressed.

In the main I use Devil's Claw, Turmeric and DLPA (dl-phenylalanine, amino acid capsules which act as a painkiller).  On top of that Saffi gets coconut oil, and her, Remy and River are on raw/rice diet as it makes a heck of a difference to Saffi's joints.

Three of mine have/have had acupuncture too - I'm waiting to see if it helps Paige as she's had her first session today, but Remy and River both showed HUGE improvement just after the first go.  I've taken Saffi to hydrotherapy in the past too, that did help - but just the heat of the water (33C as I recall) makes a difference - they tried her in the pool first (she treadmilled in the end) but she just drifts around and won't swim, but even just from that she was much improved.

Like minds!  :-)

I start mine at the same age.  I feel that it isn't going to hurt them, so why not hopefully delay any onset of the disease.

All our oldies are on Newmarket Joint Supplement (Glucosamine Hydrochloride) turmeric and frankincense (Boswellia).  Just a small  measure - maybe 5 gms of each in their food.  Seem to be doing pretty well on it so far.
