Topic Dog Boards / Health / Problems ordering Soloxine
- By lunamoona [gb] Date 05.04.14 08:27 UTC
Has anyone else had problems ordering Soloxine? I usually buy the 0.3mg but have been told by my supplier that it is no longer being produced. My vet also has said the same thing although they have roughly a months supply in stock for me to buy from them.

I'm not getting answers to whether:

a) this is a short term problem
b) if I make up the dose from the 0.2mg which is currently showing for sale, is this no longer being produced and I am just seeing 'end of line' stock available?
c) is there an alternative brand? My girl used to take forthyron (sp) but my vet changed this a couple of years ago with no clear advice why (soloxine was more expensive).
d) what happens after my months supply is up?

Anyone got any inside information as to what is actually going on with this product, I need to get this sorted before I run out of medication and vet is not being very clear.

Many thanks :)

A few years ago I had the same problem. Was told Soloxine was being discontinued and was given Thyroxyl as an alternative. Then all of a sudden the Soloxine reappeared. The dog that was taking it has since died so I don't know what the current situation is. I had almost a full pot of 0.3mg Soloxine when she died last year, shame I couldn't have sent it to you instead of giving it back to the vet to dispose of.

Gosh, how strange this has happened before.
The cynic in me is wondering if it is to get me to order through the vet again as they have offered to price match what one of the big pet pharmacies were selling at. Although, I gave up on the vet as they frequently forgot to order after I rang for a repeat and even ordered the wrong dose on occasion!

My vets' suppliers did go out of stock of the 0.3mg (possibly the rest but that's the only dose I buy atm) very briefly a few weeks back but no mention of it being discontinued.  I'd be surprised if it is as it's widely used I think - all my hypo dogs (5 to date) have been on it at some point if not permanently.

Leventa is another type although that one is a liquid, and trying to get that into a dog an hour before food can be tricky (indeed one of mine was switched to soloxine as I just couldn't get her to take it!).

A few years ago I had one on Soloxine too, and was eventually provided with Forthyron and amusingly, Thyforon too. Maybe these are more readily available.

My old Beardie was on it.  Originally Forthyron, the name was changed to Thyforon, although it is exactly the same thing.

I can't help on the long term availability but try Hyperdrug or Viovet. They both seem to be selling the 0.3mg dosage
