Hi ya - I've never done this (AI out in Canada/America but not that) - we tended to use a young potential stud dog on our own bitch, or one belonging to somebody I was prepared to cooperate with in which case they'd agree to this on the assumption that the dog was fertile (if he had libido, chances are he was!!).   In which case I'd waive the stud fee until there was a litter on the ground.   I guess with an older dog who wasn't doing the job?, it might be a good idea - but I may be wrong... can't a regular vet do this?   Was the case in Canada!!

>can't a regular vet do this?

I tried to use an older champion male who had sired just one litter (but the bitch had problems and only one pup survived.

He was rather clueless and had met with the bitch for the whole season, and finally performed.

Dog lived in other end of the country and owner kindly brought him to me to mate to my mature maiden bitch.  she was quite willing, but he was really clueless, going a5t things half heartedly but always stepping off before he managed to mate her.  Eventually he mated her about day 20 and we held him in place so he didn't get off prematurely this time, to enable a tie, needless to say no pups.

Next season I decided to try him with her mother, but suggested she might like to get a sample looked at THE VET REFUSED TO DO IT suggesting she might try and get a sample at home and bring it in!!!

What use would that have been, when your trying to ascertain motility etc.

So again he came down and again no pups and he only mated her on day 21 just before the owner came to get him.

With a numerically small breed even lovely males get very little chance to be used or often are too closely related to bitches of their own generation, and by the time there are suitable girls available the time ahs passed or the dogs having never been used won't perform for the first time as veterans, or bitch owners are unwilling to take a chance on an older untried dog.
