This is probably a question for someone from the states but... With giant breed puppies some breeders put them onto high quality adult food whilst young I.e. once a few months old as it has lower protein. The idea is to keep the overall growth of the puppy slow and steady this aides the developing bones and joints (growing too much too quick is bad).

Iv seen it been given as advice quite a few times by American breeders, and it seems that for some breeds it's quite a common practice. So my question is, does anyone have any links or info on the subject?

Just edited to add that I don't want the thread to be about why one should or should not feed adult food as I'm just after some links, thanks in advance.

If you google greatdane lady I'm sure she has lots info about giantbreed feeding.
I have surfed on her site as it has info about HOD etc and I'm sure there is parts about feeding adult food to puppies (she actually recommends brands).

You might find this article of interest:

"A common misconception found in many internet articles is the claim that dietary protein should be controlled in large breed puppies to prevent skeletal abnormalities. This theory was disproved some years ago (Nap, 1991). Most commercial puppy foods contain more protein than is thought necessary, but studies have shown that protein contents of 23% to 31% (dry matter) do not have a deleterious effect on growth."
