Topic Dog Boards / Health / Constipation in elderly dog

My elderly C. Spaniel ( aged 11) is having really hard poos, in fact she goes a little, runs around goes again and so on until she is clear, sometimes it can take 3-4 goes for her to feel happy. She is not really consipated but is not comfortable with the hardness. What is the best thing to add to her food ( she is on AG Lamb) I have started adding a little warm water to her kibble as I was told this would soften her up, but no change in the 3 days I have been doing this.
Any advice would be very welcome.

ps She is very healthy in every other way and runs around like a far younger dog, her weight is perfect and joints fine.

Tinned Pedigree dog food!  Mix a couple of tablespoons with her dry food for a while.  She will soon loosen up.

Could she be a little dehydrated? I would monitor her water intake for a while and make sure she is drinking properly :)

Indeed, but be warned, you may get more than you bargain for!!

Many thanks to all.
She is drinking normally plus the extra warm water that I am adding to her kibble so I think she is ok on this. She does have a little Chappie tinned on her food as a topper, but have ordered ( tesco delivery) some pedigree tinned this week to see if it works better for her.  I have found in the past that this would give my dogs the most awful runs so have never used it since and avoid it like the plague, but "good thinking Batman" this may do the trick for her on this occasion. As you say I had better have plenty of ProKolin around if it REALLY works well.

Pedigree original worked well. I think it is an awful food but as a laxative it is marvellous.
Many thanks for suggesting this.

Hi, try adding liquid paraffin or lactulose to her food. Make sure she is drinking plenty and if no better in a couple of days probably go to the vet

I know, but it has the desired affect!  :-)

I had the same with my 10 year old and started putting a lot of water on her dry kibble, now she is fine :-)
