Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Ovulation Tester

I have borrowed one of these from a friend to test my bitch for the 'right day'. It seems easy enough to use and does not hurt the bitch (I thought it might do). Would like to know if anyone else has used one and what results were had. Understand that you have to wait until the reading reaches a false peak, then drop and then starts to rise again - then you have 24 hours to mate. We had three readings yesterday of 250, 250 and 280, today we had 450, 450 and 580 and later this evening as high as 650. Think we will try again tomorrow and see what the reading is but then try mating her on Saturday (day 10 since we saw colour). I will report on results if any and would welcome any views anyone may have. Incidentally this bitch had one litter 19 months ago and missed last season!!

Hi Alice, I bought one last year. On the plus side every bitch we used it on has had a litter, but I am not sure if I wouldnt just have mated them at the same time whilst watching for the usual signals. The 'fit n fetile' guy, was very scathing about them, and said you could only really assess the success is by doing only 1 mating just when the machine says - there is a flw in the logic there somewhere, I think:). The first bitch I used it on had fertility problems - one litter, then nothing for almost 4 years, she had erratic seasons, and would happily stand from about day 2 to day 20! The tester said mate from day 7, we did, and got 5 pups (also mated day 9, 11 & 13:).
I think i t is a useful back up, look forward to hearing how you do with it.

On a similar topic I got a mail from a pug friend in America saying she had been doing a study of urine test strips to predict fertility, and whils neither she nor her vet had any idea why ph should change due to ovulation, it appears to, and the chang in colour of the strips conicided exactly with premate blood tests. She has promised to update on here further findings.

Hi
Friends of mine have been using the strips very successfully for years. They don't know how or why it works, just that it does appear to. They were told this information by a nurse friend of theirs who I think has golden retrievers. They have been doing this since 1990.
