Might help - there are many other websites about this condition.   If surgery can be avoided, do because sometimes the eye can become dry afterwards, causing problems of it's own.   It is possible to massage the bulge back in again - again there is information about how to do this online.

He can be shown (I'd have to ask whether this condition has to be reported for permission beforehand - certain corrective surgery requires this) but should NOT be bred from as there is an hereditary aspect to this.   And if I were you, I'd not repeat this combination either.

It's correct to say that the gland can be tucked back in under local anaesthesia, but it often pops out again, and if this happens surgery to suture the gland back in position is the best option (not cutting the gland off which is a last resort as pointed out in the above article). The dog should not be shown - why promote a dog with a genetic disease? I would ring all the owners of all the offspring the bitch has ever produced to see if any of them have developed cherry eye and also contact any owners of pups the dog has sired, if you can.

My American cocker had it as a puppy, the first vet tacked it but it popped out again, which was the last straw as I was already unhappy with that vet. We changed vets and he had an op to create a pocket for it and suture it in properly and he never had any trouble since, he will be 12 years old next month. :-) I suppose technically you should get an authority to compete form as it's altering the natural conformation of the dog??
