Farmers for generations have fed the cheapest foods to their dogs. Most of the farm collies down here in deepest Somerset get whatever the local feed merchants have on offer, they work hard all day especially those who work sheep and eat anything. Maybe its a sign that good health and longevity are more to do with the fitness and activity levels than the food !! Plus most farm dogs are bred for the ability to work and nothing to do with what they look like. The dogs at the farm I grew up on worked their socks off all day for a bowl of tinned meat and biscuits at the end of the day and a bowl of milk when the cows were in !! They often made 13 - 14 years old and still worked. They lived in outside kennels and got the odd bone thrown their way. They ate cow pats regularly (There must be something good in them !) rarely had illnesses just the odd cut or sprain.
Not the way I want my dogs to live but they always seemed to be happy. We had a collie who went off with the shepherd every morning and returned home at night to scoff his dinner and play with my brother and I he was great for adventures and put up with whatever we wanted to do, going along with being a ships dog, cowboy, or a guest at my dolls tea parties !! He did sleep indoors but in the boot room. He was swift to give us a quick nip if we abused his nature (he never broke the skin but gave us a "Pinch") but never was aggressive. He taught us all about how to behave round dogs. If memory serves me right he ate tinned chappie and terrier biscuits ! He lived a long time, he was around from me being about 4 -5 and still alive when I left home to live in when I did my nursing training at 16.
