Hi we have a 15week old Border collie pup who seems to only want to eat from my wife's hand.He seems scared of his bowl at times tipping it over ,picking the odd bit of food out and eating on his mat .He has been on his food for 4 weeks no problems before now .Vets kitchen mixed with cooked chicken or fish .Many thanks in advance

Hi,
I think the more you feed by hand the more he will refuse his bowl as he is pushing the boundaries. He will not starve, so I would put the food in the bowl and stand back. If he spills it, he will eat off the floor, this is still better than the hand. I have had a dog go almost a week without eating, but in the end he gave in and ate properly. He is being like a child and trying to get his own way, and the more you give in and hand feed the longer it will take to get him over this. I know it is awful to have a dog that does not eat and you feel as though you want to do anything to get some food into him, but you are playing into his hands. Just be strong as he really will not starve. ( I assume that there is no health reason for him not eating and that he eats happily from the hand) Be strong or else he will walk all over you !!!
I am sure there are more knowledgeable than me that will answer, but this is my opinion.

Maybe also try a different shape/material bowl for his food or even a saucer or just put it straight onto the floor (on a mat). It may be that the bowl is suddenly spooking him.

Quite often a metal bowl will cause the dog to be wary (could be a reflection, the sound of their id tag clinking against the bowl etc). As another poster said, I'd try a plastic bowl or a saucer. I'd also only put very small amounts down so the dog actively wants you to add more.
