Topic Dog Boards / General / Chewing puppy - ideas for "indestructible" toys?
- By Jan Date 21.02.14 15:45 UTC
My 6 month old lab x goldie (who has finished teething) is an expert chewer.  She destroys most toys in minutes and I am limited in what I can give her.  This morning she has eaten the top third of a black kong while I was out - I'm waiting to see if it passes through :(.  She ate half a clothes peg yesterday before I realised.

She gets plenty of exercise (within her age constraints), mental stimulation and training.  It isn't just when she is on her own - I gave her a hard rubber hoop earlier this week and she took a chunk out of it straight away.  She will also chew chunks out of her bedding.

Does anyone have any ideas on toys I can try/other things to stimulate her?  I am not a novice owner but I've never had such a chewer; I've had dogs all my life and she is my youngest of four at present.

Thanks!

Oh I have one of these! She even ate our leather corner couch. (Good job I buy once a year on Ebay and never new!) The only things I have found that last a while are Nylabone toys -rings and similar. Unfortunately not the most interesting toys, but she does like them. They do get chewed eventually, but it takes weeks!

My toy breed had the corner off a Nylabone in no time. What about a Stag Bar ? I have had no problems with broken teeth.
I also give the rice bones.

Are you sure you mean Nylabone? The really rock hard brown or white ones?  It takes weeks for a very large Malinois to get any marks at all onto a Nylabone, and my toydogs took YEARS to do any damage to any at all. Also if using the rings like I suggested, no corners. :)

It was a rubbery chicken flavour Nylabone. She was biting bits off the end so it went in the bin.

The rubbery puppy Nylabones are softer than the adult ones, and the packaging says to discard them when the adult teeth start coming through.

Thanks.  Yes, the nylabones are the only things that we have left...

I'm a bit worried about the stag bar as I have heard of so many dogs with broken teeth, but thanks for the suggestion.

Have any of you tried a Goughnut ring?  I found them online this afternoon.

By the way, the clothes peg has now passed through - fingers crossed for the kong!

Oops ! So what's the difference between the white and black ?

And has the OP tried bones ?

I was going to suggest a Goughnut, mine survived two Staffies and a TM, so worth a go.

Does she have to chew?  Sometimes it just feeds a habit and makes them worse.

I might be inclined to distract when she is with you and head her off to do something else more interesting (walk, train etc);   remove temptation when she is on her own (as far as that is possible); and only give her challenging chews as food rather than recreation.  Is she kibble fed?  As a raw feeder I'd offer turkey necks and chicken wings and frozen lumps of mince or meat.  If you feed kibble you can soak it then split it into portion sized blocks and serve frozen.

I have one that would easily eat a black Kong but as soon as I only gave food, rather than chews, he stopped being interested in anything else!
