Family pup large breed ,just 5 months old is still being car sick.
Have any of you had this problem?
If so how have you helped them over come this.
Really need to sort this as have a holiday home which will be reopened soon & pup will need to be in the car for approx 2 hours at a time, We have not fed him before a journey, very short journeys ,hes sick most times !!! HELP PLEASE
I had one who was sick right up until 6 months then suddenly stopped. I never withheld food as it made him more distressed so we'd just travel with spare vet bed, a bin bag, some kitchen roll and a newspaper!
I would take him out each and every day and gradually the interval before he was sick got longer. One of our problems is that we have a lot of country roads before we get to motorways and straight roads so he was hefted around a bit. Reducing the size of his car crate did reduce the amount and incidence of sickness significantly but it still happened at least once every trip for months...
Some people swear by Sturgeron for motion sickness but I didn't try it. I was about to get some, and check dosage etc, then realised that he hadn't been sick for the last two trips and he was never sick again!!
I would recommend a crate - pups are less likely to be sick if they are able to lay down and they seem more willing in to do this when they can 'nest', and brace themselves for corners :)

I have used this with 2 travel sick Goldie pups, on the recommendation of a friend, and it did work. Luckily it's no longer needed. :)

I'm one of those who swear by Stugeron and in fact am using it currently for an almost 6 month old and her mother!! ( not sure it's inherited!!).
I have used it on various dogs since 1996 successfully. I use it for a few months then try without going back to it immediatley if the sickness is still there when Stugeron free.

Stugeron here as well. Nothing worse than leaving for a show with a pristine Papillon, newly bathed, blow dried and groomed, only to arrive with one with sick all over its front! (Or even worse, once arrived to a champ show having travelled two together, so even the one that had NOT been sick was covered in it.) It works really well and is usually not forever.
I take it that this is the one advertised for humans as I cannot seem to find it for animals .(Stugeron that is )
Thank you for all replys its nice of you for all your help ,

Yes you get it from Boots.

It didn't help me on our sailing holiday mind you..... :-(
I've heard of some people just putting the pup in the car for short periods of time and getting them gradually longer, without going anywhere. This helps them get used to the car. You might want to stay in the car with them.
Maybe taking him when he is sleepy and wanting to sleep might help.
Also have a reward at the end of a short journey, i.e. walk, so they associate the car with something good.
It sometimes helps if they don' t have have the whole of the back of an estate car to move a round in it, but just space for them to curl up and feel secure. As already has been suggested a crate could help.

Opi was just the same at that age. Tiny journeys, shorter than the time it took for her to get sick and built it up from there. Now she has no problem at all and I think she was about 7 or 8 months when she'd gotten past it. Since then she's done multiple 5 or 6 hour journeys over the years with no trouble.
I've never needed anti sickness stuff but I've heard of Stugeron being helpful as others have said - or in a pinch, a gingernut can be good too (ginger is good for travel sickness and nausea generally). Helps me too when I get carsick :-)
