As these have been discussed before, just thought I would post something I read today.

Antler Dog Chews - an upsurge of fractured upper carnassial teeth

In the last few weeks we have experienced a surge in the numbers of fractured teeth from antler chews sold for dogs as "natural tooth cleaning". The teeth damaged have all had the same buccal slab fractures of the upper carnassials (see below). Many have fractured so severely that surgical extraction is the only treatment possible.

Severe fracture of the left upper carnassial in four fragments. Surgically removed.

Antler responsible for tooth fracture. Blood on chewed end.

The advertising typically claims they are good for cleaning teeth, that dogs cannot bear down on them and being safe for puppy teething. Given their hardness (see the fractured teeth page) the damage is the most extreme we can remember. Since antlers are bone our normal advice applies in this regard. See the following information sheet from the US Government.

A letter signed by a group of concerned vets and nurses has been sent to the Veterinary Record to warn the profession at large and also to recruit cases for a detailed study. In addition major pet stores and two manufacturers have been contacted regarding our concerns and to request their withdrawal from sale. In the meantime we suggest you do not stock them if you are a practice and if you are an owner with a grievance you petition for redress.

I used to think they were great until one of my dogs now has a fractured tooth.
I've now thrown them all in the bin.

They now just have stuffed kongs to chew on

Same here. Nylabones also all went in the bin after a fractured tooth in a 2nd dog!

One of mine had a fracture due to biting to hard on a knuckle bone. Now only feed softer rib bones or chicken wings.

To get it in perspective, you'd need to know how many dogs had had problems and how many dogs had been given them in the first place. Only then could you objectively state how big the problem was.

The OP is from American vets?

The British version is (I think) a bit better, it was published in the Veterinary Times last year:
Link to copy of letter sent to the Veterinary Times Regarding concern about antler 'chews'

I have to say when antlers first came on the market I was very guilty of telling everyone I 'highly recommend them' ~ but what I hadn't factored was that my dog has a particular chewing style, as I have given him antlers from the local deer farm that still have bits of velvet on them. He nibbles at the inside and doesn't attempt to bear down on them.... Knowing now that that is what other dogs may do, I wouldn't recommend antlers!

The photos in the OP's OP (if you google Dentavets which is where the article originated) shows dogs with dreadful canine oral health it has to be said ~ I wonder if people with dogs with already weekend teeth are giving antlers having bought into the 'teeth cleaning' spiel and are adding to the increased number of fractures. Unsurprising!

My pup fractured one of her teeth on an antler chew at 4months, I had actually bought it months before for my older male but he was never so fussed about it, she found it and loved it, would sit and chew away for at least 20mins a day, I didn't think she would be able to chew hard enough to do damage, but she managed a slab fracture, I felt awful :(
