Hi guys just wondering what others pay for petpassports. In N.Ireland I was quoted £112 this morning which I found a bit steep! This was for the rabies shot and admin the dog is already micropchipped. He is booked in to have it done this week as he leaves for Europe at the end of the month.

I am confused by the term 'petpassport' - the law changed a couple of years ago so dogs travel on the normal international vaccination cert (been standard in Europe for decades), the only difference, as I understand it, is that having a rabies jab has never been part of a standard vaccination course here in UK- is my understanding incorrect?

I'm not sure what you mean. You're right that the rabies jab has never been part of the standard vaccination course, and still isn't. The travel document is called a pet passport - it says that in large letters on the front cover. The vaccine and the official passport (issued by government, and different to the usual vaccination certificate which vets can print themselves to their own design) are both chargeable.

OK thanks, I did not know about the things I've bolded, so who or where do we get 'official passport' from?

From your vet. Only vets are allowed to issue them. Each one is individually numbered and the vet has to register the details on the government database.

Image of a pet passport. Each one is individually numbered at the bottom, just as your own passport is individually numbered.

I think I was about £65 per kitten when I exported two to Norway in August.

Have asked my vet this morning their charges for a passport and was told £37.50 for the jab and £37.50 for the passport.

My daughter paid £75 last year from a vet in Birmingham but I would like to know how long they are valid for??  For instance, if the Rabies shot needs to be done annually, is the booster charged separately or do we need a whole new set up?

It's like our own passport need a new one if the old one becomes full.  At least it doesn't expire!

There are 12 spaces to record Rabies vaccination, so that should last a dog at least 12 years and possibly 36 if 3 year vaccines accepted where your travelling to.

There are only 15 spaces to record tick treatment, so that would shorten the life of the passport considerably for those using it to enter the UK!!!

There are also 15 spaces for tapeworm treatment.  Also 15 spaces for other vaccinations (some countries require).

Only 5 spaces for health certification, but most airlines etc accept them on vet headed paper.

In the UK the rabies vaccine is licenced for three years, and all you need to do is get the booster done. No need for a new passport each time. :-)
