My 12 yr old male GSD keeps having a cold - very green snotty/crusty nose. He also gets black scabs in the folds of his lips. When he barks he sounds chesty as if he has a sore throat. He is fed on a raw/Barf diet and looks in really good shape considering. He was given anti biotics about 4/5 months ago for this but it has returned. This has been the 4th time he has needed treatment for this. He has also had diarrhoea this weekend. He is on a low dose of steriods for his hdm allergy (2mgs daily) he has AF but this has been very low grade now for about 2years and has caused no problems for him. We are heading to the Vets as soon as we can get an appointment this week. He seems quite bright and eating well, still wants to come for walks. I am trying to keep him away from other dogs at the moment just incase he is contagious but my other 2 dogs seem fine this time and on the last occasions have never caught it. Any idea's?

Continuous steroids, even a low dose, can cause immunosuppression, so it may be worth checking this out with the vet.

Has the vet done a swab of the matter from the dog's nose?   As  it's the 3rd or 4th time this has  happened, it may be worth screening him for any likely infections.

Just remember, when reading it, that doctors studying diseases end up thinking they have all of them - at once!    And I'm pretty sure vets are the same :-)    So it's just for info and so  you can ask your vet to look further, not any indication of  what may, or may not be your dog's problem ;-)
