May I ask, which breeds are allowed to use bate in the ring?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.12.13 10:11 UTC
All, as far as I know - it's just more common in some than others.

Not sure what you mean -do you refer to bait as when the Boxer exhibitors throw it across the ring, or simply feeding your dog treats? I'd never take any dog into a ring unless I could reward it with food to ensure it was a pleasant experience, and there are no rules.

Thank you!

You haven't lived until you've been clocked by a lump of liver :D

I do wish there was a rule about not throwing bait.

I know some people would like to see bait banned, because they have a stacked breed, but for those of us with free standing breeds who would prefer to sniff the ground would be disadvantaged if we could not use treats in the ring.

The bait should only ever go from hand to mouth NEVER BE THROWN, so  distracting other exhibits, or be left on the ground making it hard to show your dog who is looking for the bat when  standing or worse moving on loose lead.

What bate do people use? I know about liver.

anything your dogs likes really but can be in small pieces so its just enough to reward without chewing forever! something thats good for the pocket or treat bag and not too messy in my opinion.

BAIT can be entirely your choice..or your dogs..lol.
It is better not to be crunchy as that can be heard by neighbouring dogs & put them off(big no no). Also something that doesnt take an age to be eaten...the last thing a judge want to see is a dog chewing on food.
Liver is common & can be cut into the size you require, it can be meesy & too much will give an upset stomach.
There are lots of tasty products on sale...I have known some toy people use cheese.

LOL we often use an empty crisp packet in pocket to make noises with but the best situation is always when somebody in front of you are feeding their dog very obviously and noisily as that way the dog's ears will go up!! We always try to be behind somebody for that reason.

I have one dog that ONLY will show for Mariner's Choice or Fish 4 Dogs treats which is a bit of a pain as they are huge and takes forever to chew, but it's what works. The judge can wait, we PAY to be there!! She will even spit sausages out. Have another who hates anything chicken, you can give her a bowl full of mixed raw meat and she will eat everything BUT the chicken.

The Papillons are tiny so tend to get sliced ham and similar.

I take two diffrent baits in with me, smaller bits of meat sticks or garlic sausage, then a bigger chunk of dryed liver. The liver is for her to chew at while I hold it when she is on the table to keep her mind off being touched all over by the judge to stop her leaning or turning around. She then gets it after we leave the ring and gets the small bait while in the ring.
