I have noticed that my 9 and half month old BC uses his tongue to taste a smell!  I thought he was eating something and then realised that he was licking and smelling.  I gave him an old toy that his breeder gave to us when we had him.  Some of his siblings suck their sheep toys and I had taken Eddy's away because Meg would just rip it up.  This morning I gave it to him while Meg was out of the way.  He sampled it with his tongue again and sniffed it then took it away and sucked it for a while, finally bringing it back to me to throw to him.  

Another thing he does is smell poo a lot.  When he goes himself he checks it over afterwards.  If Meg is trying to go to the toilet he follows her all round the garden with his nose up her backside!  Then of course he marks it. 

As for the sucking thing - he likes fleeces and if he can find a label on anything then he chews it. 

Just wondered how common these things are because my other dogs haven't done any of these things. 

My GR has to remove the labels on everything - once removed he isn't bothered with that toy any more - he also sniffs his own offerings too. Tennis balls have to be de-fluffed as soon as possible :-)

My terrierX sucks material and is also a label remover whereas my WSD doesn't do any of those behaviours - his weird behaviours are in other areas :-)

My GR pup is keen on labels and nibbles at them on toys although hasn't removed them. She sniffs her 'offerings' with a distasteful look on her face and any other dogs she is positively horrified by.

My 7 year old BC loves sucking his sheep.  He's got 2, a pale yellow and a pale pink.  Right tart he is!

Nando licks and sometimes salivates at certain smells!

That is the other thing young Edison does - when I get a ball out for him to play he salivates terrifically.  After a walk with him I have this nasty gooed on ball to carry home.  Thankfully he carried it himself yesterday!

I use the basket type ball because it collects less goo and muck and also is better for him to play with and carry.
