Topic Dog Boards / General / dog beds...which??
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 01.12.13 15:54 UTC
Up until now fred the poodle has had a single duvet folded in 4 and fitted inside a large pillowcase type cushion which my friends mum kindly made. I put a vet bed on top to make it extra snuggly :-) it has done him well but now it needs replacing.
Star the lurcher has a duvet in a cover folded up inside his crate along with veg bedding on the top.
star has now had the crate taken away as he can finally be trusted not to trash the house or dirty protest when we leave him :-) so weve been looking at getting the pair of them nice beds (for their xmas present!)
We went to pets at home today simply so we could 'size them out'. It looks like fred will do well in a medium and star needs x or xx large.
ideally we would like matching beds, preferably with sides so they dont get any drafts and really soft and cushioned is a must for stars skinny bones.also something quite 'solid'.not neccessarily plastic but anything too flimsy seems to hold an invitation for star to play with/toss up in the air by his mouth
any ideas???
Thanks in advance

I've had one of these .    http://www.danishdesign.co.uk/product/easy-care-beds/  for over 12 years, it's been through incontinent dogs and pishy puppies, and still comes back for more, the whole thing is soft, but it is heavy, so no chance of it being flung about. On the downside, they aren't the nicest looking, but they make up for it in performance.
Or, you could get a Tuffie, I got Daisy one a few months ago, little git isn't enamoured by it at all, it's in the back of the car, so she has no choice, ungrateful wretch.

This type is my latest purchase  http://www.muddypaws.co.uk/dog-beds/waterproof-beds/heavy-duty-waterproof-bed?sid=hj62grv9rqj80uadni9urk3bk2  The dogs appear to find them really comfortable as they don't jump on the sofa's quite so often!  They are easy to keep clean and hairs don't stick to them but as they are quite deep, any dirt stays in them until I hoover it out. The sides are supportive and they love hanging their heads over them. I bought them large enough for them to stretch out full length on their backs with their legs in the air, a favourite position. Other times they curl up snugly and there is room for two! They do rectangular as well as oval.

Thank you.
celli, which bed did you have?the link took me to the homepage and the dog bed tab had a long list of options.

ive looked at the tuffies, particularly like the look of the 'nest' but I imagine not every dog would be happy in it and mine are fussy!

You do know that if you buy such different sized beds, the wrong dogs will always be in the wrong beds, don't you ... ? LOL

I find garden centres great for beds, if you have any big ones around.

I've got the Tuffy mattress style, which I keep at my daughter's in Buckinghamshire, the idea being I wouldn't have to keep taking beds up with me. Since I bought the Countrydogs, I take them up and put them on top of the mattresses!! Well, they do love them! I put a nice vet bed in them and a cushion for their heads. The tuffies are good though, so good we have put two together lengthwise sometimes to make a spare bed at family do's.

Hi
I have the Pet Lounger, which is a grey leatherette rectangle, the ones now seem to have a fleece covered pad in them, which I would hope would come out for washing, my one doesn't have that and is just padded leatherette. My one has been incredibly had wearing, having endured GSD's , Staffies and a TM, not to mention dogs here on holiday, most of whom have been enthusiastic diggers. Having sides to it, it has the advantage of keeping all the crud and grit contained, where it can be easily tipped out and the bed given a wipe.
I've found on the whole, that Danish Design beds are very hard wearing, I also have several giant igloo's which are medium dog sized, we refer to them as Daisy's bedroom, she keeps all manner of treasures in them, you never know what you'll find lol.

Ditto.  I've often used the Tuffies for my brothers children, who think they're brilliant, and I've slept on them once too.  They're very comfortable for people!

Tuffies are great for dogs that like to sleep flat out, or with their heads draped off the sides but I've heard really good things about the Country Dog beds.  I looked at them for my terrier type mongrel once but changed my mind when I moved things around...  I know a lady that swears by hers - she has the large rectangular ones with sides and says there's nothing better if you live in a draughty old cottage :)

http://www.farmandpetplace.co.uk/products/pet/dog/dog-beds/waterproof-dog-beds/regal-extra-superior-blue-water-proof-bed-40.html

I've just bought the biggest one of these for Nando. The sides are nice and sturdy and the material is waterproof so it can be hosed down. It's quite heavy so shouldn't be flung about too easily! I've filled it with fleece blankets however I'm thinking of adding more pillows when it gets colder as it's too big even for him- a GSD!!

Look around as they might be cheaper elsewhere but overall I'd really recommend them. The inner cushion is removable if you needed to take a bed somewhere for the dogs a few nights too. Don't underestimate how big they are.. it barely fitted in the back seat of my car!!l
