Topic Dog Boards / Health / Vet needed for anal gland removal
- By Gabrielle Date 27.11.13 20:03 UTC
One of the dogs we rehomed through breed rescue (I am the co-ordinator, not the breeder) has had ongoing problems with his anal glands. Despite using All Bran, the situation has continued and their vet has advised the owners that the dog should have his anal glands removed.

Their own vet has apparently said he would do the surgery, but has also said he is not a specialist in this area. The owners have asked me to try and find a vet who comes recommended to do this surgery.
They live in the Shrewsbury area but are willing to travel and the dog is insured.

Can anyone recommend a specialist vet?

Many thanks, Gabrielle :-)

I don't know if they are specialists but I do know someone who has had this operation recently on their cocker. He has recovered very well and they are very pleased with the improvement in him. They went to Nantwich Veterinary Hospital, Not a million miles away from Shrewsbury.

Thanks for that... I forgot about Nantwich... I took my first dog there when he had a tumour and the staff were lovely.

Thank you :-)

One of our Bassets had this surgery, done by my regular vet out in Canada.   I have to say it's NOT a surgery I'd have done if there is any alternative.   He was okay, but it was a nasty surgery in terms of having to keep his stools soft for some time.   We got pretty close to needing this done, with another hound who had repeated bouts of AG inpaction and infection.   Repeated flushing and packing didn't achieve a result, so the next step was to have them removed.   Thankfully at the last moment, he seemed to improve, and the surgery was avoided.

I would have thought any good vet would be able to do this surgery without the need for a specialist?

I still urge you to try to resolve this by topical treatment (oral tablets, antibiotics, rarely work).   And look to diet - never mind using All Bran, if you can get his stools firmed up, the glands should work correctly.   But the treating vet should know whether surgery is now the only option.
