Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sore tail end

Tara my 4 year old Rottweiler has a sore end to her tail.
She kept wagging it and it hitting the wall when the decorators were here causing the problem :(
What can I do to dry it up and help it heal? It is not infected, just sore. I keep putting Surgical spirit on it to stop infection.

There was a discussion on this on a Facebook group recently. Tails are notoriously difficult to heal for exactly the reason you state- getting knocked!

You could buy some of that foam tubing that insulates pipe and vet wrap it on, or a toilet roll tube, and I also shortly after found these which I didn't know existed: http://www.bonovate.com/dogends.html
Possibly salt water soaks would help to keep it clean but probably other people who have experienced it will have a better idea on that.

My lad split his tail recently.  We were doing building work and he cut it on a raw breeze block edge, then kept banging it every time he lollopped into the kitchen.  At one stage it looked like an abattoir in there...

I couldn't apply anything to him other than antiseptic - bandages and tubes were never going to work - and found the most reliable method was to prevent him from making it worse.  I restrained him in narrow spaces, held his tail when saying hello, put his lead on outside rather than next to the door, and hung a towel over one end of the kitchen units.  We all still wince every time he whacks his tail but it's no no longer splitting and bleeding although I think it's still a bit tender.  It hasn't stopped him flinging herself about though :)

I kept it clean with Hibiscrub after muddy walks, used a spray antiseptic when needed and gave arnica for the bruising.

My best tip Lea is vaseline and just keep putting gazillions on - I find this helps soften the tail those making less prone to splitting too.

Never managed to keep any contraptions on though despite trying!  but wagging always an issue!

Tectona,
Thank you :)
I havent ordered that but we have found an equivalent from some packaging thats identical to that stuff :)
That and masking tape is working wonders :) We put it on her this morning and the tail end is already drying out as she cant get to it to lick it :)
She does look rediculous with a bright orange mesh and on her tail though LMAO
Lea :)
