Topic Dog Boards / General / Cleaning wee stain off wood

My naughty youngster doesn't believe in going outside if it's cold or wet or dark, so I have to keep remembering to take her in this sort of weather. A few days ago she sneaked off and weed in the dining room on the oak wood floor, and it wasn't discovered until the following morning. I've had a scrub with pet disinfectant and water, but there's a dark stain - any ideas on whether it's possible to remove or at least improve on the mark? It's partly hidden by the dining room table, but it would be nice if it wasn't so obvious!

Had this problem too. Foolishly placed a puppy pen on oak flooring in mistaken belief that nothing could leak through. Alas, when pups  left  I removed trays and found large areas of staining.  I have discovered that wet cleaning makes the marks worse and the staining deeper ,probably because the wood has become more permeable.
But, I have noticed that the marks do fade over time and wood does vary in shade anyway. I was advised that the whole floor would need to be re-sanded and and re stained if I wanted floor as before. Frankly, I have more important things to do with my time and money and we just live with the marks , which as I said, have faded through time.

You need to treat it like any other 'water' stain.  What finish do you have on your wood floor - oil, wax, lacquer etc?

I'd suggest talking to someone who is experienced with your material and or googling same, your local fitter or showroom might be able to help if it's a modern floor.  Wooden floorboards in a period home might be more forgiving but either material will show a mark if the urine has really penetrated the wood unless you opt to completely sand and refinish.  The finish will determine your stain removal options but you could try the For Dummies site - How to Remove Water Stains from Wood Furniture

Another option that grandmothers and housekeepers everywhere will recognise is the iron and brown paper routine.  Whether this is an old wives tale or not it gets retold to each new generation and must have some merit. However I can't remember exactly what problems it's supposed to work on!  Perhaps you could google that too :)

Good luck.  I'm about to fit a wooden floor so it's good to know what I should be aware of (sorry!)

I thought the iron and brown paper routine was for wax or similar. Must have been very useful in the days before electricity. :-)
