After a full day I come home and im told the FIL is getting a puppy for xmas from his wife. Background story he has a pug from my first litter. He had to have his eye removed due to injury and I didnt have the heart to sell him so he went to family. They wanted a play mate for him but couldn't afford to buy another so got a adult from a breeder reducing her numbers. All settled in well. We both attend pug walks in the county and a few pug crossbreeds also attend. A lady that bred 2 of the crosses is also there and I got into abit of a spat of X breeding and she said its a companion what does it matter. To which I said if they were JUST companions then she would give them away. Not sell them for 600 each. The sire to the litter also on pug walk. This completely tainted it for me and I was reluctant to go on one again. Particularly as in red hot summer they saw no issues with walking in the heat of the day.

She also touted that she was having another xbred litter before they got the 2nd pug. I told them no way and pulled a face so they could see me when they were talking to her.So it turns out they are having one of these mongrels FIL knows nothing about it as it will be a surprise.  Im completely shocked and disgusted that they are supporting this kind of person. Albeit she may be intentionally good and best intentions blah blah. My darling boyf son of aforementioned FIL said its non of my business and im a dog Nazi. To which I said if you think that then you really know nothing of me and what I believe in dog wise. I said I will let them know my displeasure and if they ask me to chip ill put mongrel on the form lol. Im not happy but it really is non of my business and they are pug lovers now. But WHY BUY A CROSS when for a few more hundred pound they could get the real thing. Oh and I dont even think she knows what pde or hemivertabrae is. And im not sure if recently a previous pup had major surgery to correct boas. Am I ott or was I right to flip out? They must never listen to me go on about dogs. But what do I know.....

Eta are Facebook meet uo groups just set up as another way of advertising.  Its really ruined it for me and ive removed myself from the group.  And will not attend another. Its the 2nd one I know of which have been used as an avenue to sell pups.  Badly bred or xbred. Can there not be a gathering of breed lovers without another agenda!!!??? I wouldnt dream of touting for business like that. And tbh some of the owners although innocent complete pet owners who havent really a clue when it comes to true breed needs and I wouldn't sell to them anyway.

Well you are certainly not a dog Nazi, gulp!  What a thing to say..........

It's darn annoying isn't it?....... you know what you are talking about, you know best, but they go and do the complete opposite.

The trouble is the mention of someone having puppies seems to turn sensible people into panting zombies, everything goes out of their head but the thought of someone they know having pups.

What you need to do is counteract and show them a picture of some newly born Pugs from a responsible breeder and ask if your FIL would like to see them with you. That is how you steer people away from other litters, show an interest in his wonderful present for his wife and get him in your car to a health tested responsible breeder quickly.

Once he sees the pups, he'll forget all about the cross breeds at £600 each,  and he'll get everything that a responsible breeder gives along with the pup.

I've done this with friends, it always works, you've just got to push in and take over. (In a very, very, nice way) :-)

I know exactly how your feeling. I got in to an argument over Facebook with a friend (well ex friend! She deleted me) over the ethics of breeding pug x beagles, she basically said that because the bitch had won 'prettiest bitch' at Scrufts she should be bred from. Oh and that Scrufts was on par with Crufts. Sigh. I've also got a friend who has bred her bitch to her other dog, no health tests and no thought! She even rang me in a panic to say 'the dogs were stuck together?!' Honestly. And finally on my long list, my cousins wife has a Lhasa apso pup who is 16 weeks old and she's already found a stud for it! She was brought from the free ads on a whim and she (the wife that is) wants to 'earn the money back.'

It's fun fun fun in my little part of the world as you can tell ;)

I cannot believe he had the audacity to call you a dog nazi! I personally would not touch a crossbreed litter with a barge pole.

I know just how you feel :-(

I'd lend you my brick wall to bang your head on, but I'm using it at the moment ;-)

Carrington's idea sounds good.    I've been as far as finding a litter for someone, but because I did't put them in the car and take them, they ended up with a BYB/other bred one which barely resembles the breed - again !

Also trying to help another person avoid being lumbered with another dog because their adult  daughter wants one for when she's bored a couple of times a week, and just won't take no for an answer.    Guess who will have to look after it and pay all the vets bills?

I only found out about no2 pug when he posted a pic of him on fb. Didnt seek my advice at all or if i knew anything about the breeder. Hes been off sick from work as long as ive known them. Degeneration of the vertebrae in his neck and Dane was a new lease of life for him. A reason to get out. Something to get him out of the house and moving as he has bad muscle wasting. I was really happy for him. And to find out this its like a kick in the stomach really. Ive promised I wont get involved as its a surprise and non of my business.  But the 3 of them I also think will be too much health wise. Dane is only 14 months and a bit of a handful. But I know if I have another litter not a chance of them having another, which was a consideration previously.

This happened to me.  Someone who wanted to use one of my boys asked me to join her group advertising any pups for sale.  I replied saying this smacked of BYB and I wouldn't support this.  I no longer use FB, it's a load of rubbish anyway.  People even put on there when they have put the rollers in mothers hair.  Yeah, really scintillating conversation.

You can pretty much chose what you want to see. :) I find it invaluable. I have made so many contacts abroad in both my breeds. Had so much help with various issues. So much support during bad times. Get such a lot of news for my breed notes for one of the dog papers. And get to see photos and videos of dogs and cats I've bred. And just recently regular photo updates on the litter my co-owned dog has sired to a bitch abroad. And when I got an urgent problem where one of my cats was terrorising one other to the point of the other cat getting very seriously ill as a result of stress, I mentioned it on FB and within literally an hour had a friend (real life friend) in dogs offering the troublesome cat a home. It's also the only way to find out what my kids are up to!! I love it. :) But I never frequent the puppy selling groups. Nor do I use it to sell.

> But I never frequent the puppy selling groups.

I do - but after a year of it I'm almost burnt out. The people on them and their acts are unspeakable. It is a real eye opener though, if you really want to see how the masses regard their animals, their care and their breeding. I've seen kittens traded for drugs, BYBs breeding crossbreeds back to back, and taking photos of them giving birth on a bare floor. People willing to sell the last few puppies at cut price to any comer, so they can go on holiday (no doubt funded by the £350 each they got for the other pups sold). Even underage puppies for sale brought over from puppy farms in Hungary. Nothing surprises me any more.
And these are not a minority, far from it.

Generally though, I do like FB and have been able to rekindle contact with many long lost friends, make new ones, gain advice and give advice, and while I don't post about putting rollers in my mother's hair, I have plenty of friends who love reading about my dogs, looking at photos of great places we've walked, and yes it is great to have somewhere to be proud of the little things (like one of my dogs who after over a year of weekly 1-1 agility lessons, suddenly decided the dogwalk wasn't evil or pointless, and did it perfectly last week - cause for much rejoicing).

In return, I like reading about heir own dogs and places, and if I don't manage to get up to Scotland next summer to meet some of them, I expect I'll be unfriended en masse *grin*

Now that brings a smile to my face.  :-)  Bet you were chuffed to bits.

Gordon Bennett, that surpasses ANYTHING I could ever have imagined.

I might even still have the screenshot.
They wanted a £5 bag of weed in exchange, but the buyer said not til the following Tuesday as they were skint (so how were they going to afford cat food and cat litter?).

Louise, don't despair, there are some great, genuine Pug groups on FB (hope mine is one of them) it's just a shame if the  ones in your area are not too good.  I can only sympathise with your frustration at the family situation.  Come along to the PDWRA PArty on 8th December and have a great pug day with genuine pug lovers !

Regarding fb I find it brilliant for keeping in touch with other true dog people. ALso  Myself and another started a closed groupe for owners of pups from our breeder. I
it seems we are all people with teh same aim in mind the love of our dogs.
Louise I agree with you too, I tend to avoid all converstaion now regarding dogs and breeding it just gets me so angry, as does discussions about dangerous dogs often heard on the radio grrrr !

I just wonder why a companion dog  would be considered worthless....you said if it was just a companion then she would give them away....why ?   I havnt read the rest of this but the first post just struck me....after all most of our litters are sold as companions ....they cost the same to rear ......so just wondered why ?

If the market is there for crossbreeds,,,,not saying this is good or bad then why should they be free ? Dosnt make much sense to me

Just to keep you up to date re this situation. They are definitely getting this puppy and my oh has met her. He was round at theres yesterday and they had her for the day to socialise her with other pugs and cats. Baring in mind she 6ish weeks. Totally unnecessary and risky as she hasnt been vaccinated yet. My oh has seen pics of parents mum jrt x pug dad full black pug. He said mother very ugly and extremely undershot, puppy also being very undershot at this young age. She apparently looks quite puggy and could pass for a badly bred full pug.  Whooptydo. This has caused more than a few arguments between the two of us. Oh doesnt seem to understand how I feel or why I feel this way. And to answer the above question which is off track I think. A dog is not worthless and im not saying she should give them away at all. I dont think dogs should be a supply and demand kind of thing. Nor do I think the litter should have been created in the first place really. But it has just been bred to supply the demand of both parties. Those who wont spent or dont want to spend a little extra and the breeder who gets abit of money.
